Conn. Expected to Play Big Role in Tuesday Primary

Polls opened at 6 a.m. and are scheduled to close at 8 p.m.

After a whirlwind few days of campaigning that brought four of the five presidential candidates to Connecticut, voters will have a rare opportunity Tuesday to see their primary election preferences carry some weight.

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was the only one of the remaining candidates from the two major parties to skip campaigning in Connecticut.

State election officials are expecting a busy day at the polls. The Secretary of State's office reported a surge in voter registrations.

"I think that people know that there's a contest and they want to be part of it," Secretary of State Denise Merrill said. "Let's face it: For many years, Connecticut hasn't exactly been a battleground state. And suddenly, we're relevant."

For the Democratic candidates, 55 of the state's 71 delegates will be up for grabs. They'll be distributed mostly on a proportional basis. Meanwhile, the Republicans are vying for 25 of the state's 28 delegates, which will be distributed proportionally.

Last week's Quinnipiac University Poll showed Donald Trump leading among likely Republican primary voters and Hillary Clinton leading among likely Democratic primary voters.

Polls opened at 6 a.m. and are scheduled to close at 8 p.m.
