Arnold: I Won't Be Back (in Politics)

Fresh off a trip to visit troops in the Middle East, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger told reporters his future plans won't include a sequel in politics.

Schwarzenegger won't say what his plans are when his term expires next year, but it won't be running for another office. He never labeled himself as a politician, he told reporters in Milan, "so I am not going to run for anything else."

Schwarzenegger says he will spend the next year trying to solve problems including a projected multibillion dollar shortfall in next year's budget.

Schwarzenegger stopped by Milan en route from visiting troops in Iraq. He also visited his native Austria, where he saw the grave of his parents and ate a typical Austrian dinner that included Wienerschnitzel.

I'm no Arnold fan, but the inability to get anything done is a direct result of the fact that legislature needs a supermajority to get action in Sacramento. Most states who have this process are also in financial gridlock. Democrats hold the majority in both houses, but there are just enough indignant Republicans to keep anything from passing. The system needs to be changed, not necessarily the lawmakers.<br /><br />It seems Arnie sways with the wind when it comes to his political beliefs. First he was a Reaganesque Republican. But he's pro-choice and supports stem cell research. He's pro-business, but he supports huge tax increases and environmental policies that hamper business. Democrats already don't like him. Now Republicans are scratching their heads as well.<br /><br />Gray Davis' Waterloo was his failure to secure long term power contracts with suppliers in the early part of this decade. As a result, Bush-supported energy trading crooks like Enron were able to take advantage and jack up the rates and force power companies and consumers to pay more.
