National Emergency Protesters Gather at Los Angeles City Hall

Monday's demonstrations include 260 gatherings of activists in 47 states

A noon rally kicked off at Los Angeles City Hall as part of a nationwide set of demonstrations against President Donald Trump's declaration of a national emergency that allows him to shift funding away from Congress-approved national security initiatives and toward completion of a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The president made the declaration Friday during a news conference in the White House Rose Garden after threatening to do so for weeks to stop "an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, with all types of criminals and gangs."

Monday's demonstrations, spearheaded by MoveOn.org, include 260 gatherings of activists in 47 states "to protest Donald Trump's illegal fake emergency and his racist border wall," organizers said, and link the events to the Presidents Day national holiday.

The Los Angeles demonstration is scheduled for noon to 1:30 p.m. at Los Angeles City Hall, 200 N Spring St. A separate demonstration, sponsored by the AF3IRM Los Angeles feminist group, is set for 1:30-3 p.m. at the downtown Federal Building, 300 N. Los Angles St.
