Shriver Hinted of Trouble Months Ago

Telling comments from Shriver months ahead of break up announcement

The day after former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and his wife Maria Shriver announced they have separated, old quotes from the state's former first lady are being seen in a new light.

Shriver posted a video on YouTube in March where she talked about being in transition. She called her life "so stressful" because she said she didn't know what she was going to do next. In the clip she asked for people to send her advice on how to handle the change she was facing.

A few months before that, Shriver sat down with KCRA for a one-on-one interview.

There, you could also hear more signs of tension in her life and her marriage.

"Well, no I didn't grow up dreaming of being first lady of California. I wanted to be a first-class journalist, and writer, but it turns out that I became the first lady, too." Shriver said in December.

Shriver also told KCRA during that hour-long interview that she wanted her children to feel that their lives "had been as important as their father's dream."

At the end she said, "I have no idea what 2011 will bring for me. I have some thoughts and some ideas. ... I don't know where I will end up, but I will definitely be in a different place next year than I am today."

Following word of the split, those words take on a new meaning.

On Monday night, the couple said their split was a mutual decision and was made after a great deal of thought, discussion and prayer.

The Associated Press reports that Shriver has moved out of the couple's estate in Brentwood, but that they remain on speaking terms. They reportedly had lunch with their children this past Sunday on Mother's Day and they met privately on their 25th wedding anniversary last month.
