Diamondbacks go Deep on Dodgers in 8-4 Loss

Yosmany Tomas, Aaron Hill and Paul Goldschmidt all went deeps as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-4 on Monday night.

Brett Anderson had one of the best ERAs in the months of September and October heading into his home start against Arizona on Monday. That number just got higher…

Anderson allowed home runs to Yasmany Tomas and Aaron Hill as the Diamondbacks went deep three times, defeating the Dodgers 8-4 in the opening game of their four-game series at Chavez Ravine on Monday night.

"Sometimes you just have to tip your cap," Anderson said of his start. "They were swinging early like they were angry at the baseball."

Paul Goldschmidt also homered for the Diamondbacks who snapped a nine-game losing streak in Los Angeles.

"He made a couple mistakes up in the zone and I was able to hit him," Goldschmidt said of Anderson. "We knew we had to score some runs against them. They're probably going to win the division."

Goldschmidt finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, hitting his 29th homer of the season as the D-backs continue to play spoiler in the NL West after taking two of three from the Giants in San Francisco over the weekend.

Adrian Gonzalez and Yasmani Grandal homered for the Dodgers, but it was not enough to overcome the D-backs big bats.

Corey Seager hit an RBI double and scored a run as he became the first Los Angeles Dodgers player to reach base safely in the first 16 games of his career.

Chase Utley made his first 1,575th start of his career, but the first at third base, as the 13-year veteran handled the hot corner with no problems in his debut.

"After I got the firs groundball out of the way I felt more comfortable," Utley said of his anxiety at third. "It got better and better as they game went on."

Utley may have to get used to the position with Howie Kendrick now healthy and back in the Dodgers lineup, and Justin Turner out with tendinitis in his left knee.

"I'll continue to take groundballs at third, and if they want me to play there I will," Utley concluded.

The Dodgers scored two runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead, but Tomas's homer in the top of the fourth tied the game. Tomas is batting a scorching .355 with three homers and seven RBIs against LA since June 9th.

One inning later, Aaron Hill hit the go-ahead home run as Anderson was snake-bit by the D-backs.

Anderson allowed four consecutive hits to start the fifth, including a home run and a double before he was removed from the game in favor of Pedro Baez. In total, Anderson allowed five runs on a season-high 10 hits with one strikeout in 4.2 innings.

"They were putting the barrel of the bat on the ball," Anderson added about the fifth inning. "I haven't had good success against Goldschmidt. That's a tough lineup, the top is about as good as it gets. It was a bad day."

Entering the game, Anderson was fourth in the MLB with a career ERA of 2.48 in the months of Sept. and Oct. Trailing only Kris Medlen, Clayton Kershaw and Stephen Strasberg.

"It's a small sample size, but some of that is because I was for fresh than the average guy coming off injuries," Anderson said of his success in September and October. "You always want to end the season on a positive note, and this time of the year has been good for me so far."

Jhoulys Chacin earned his first victory of the season allowing just two runs on six hits in 5.1 innings. It was Chacin's first major-league victory since June 12, 2014.

"Once we got the lead 5-2, I just tried to make sure I finished and didn't give any more runs back," Chacin said.

Grandal's homer in the bottom of the eighth inning was his first home run from the right side of the plate in a Dodger uniform and his first overall since August 1st. It was also his 16th homer of the season, the most in his four-year career.

Game Notes:
Corey Seager set an LA Dodgers franchise record as he has reached base safely in the first 16 starts of his career. Brooklyn Dodgers great, Jim Gilliam has the all-time record with 24.
