Trevor Hoffman, the closer for the Padres seemingly since the 1970s, is going to be throwing his change up for either the Dodgers or the Brewers next season.

Los Angeles has one huge advantage in the bidding — it’s not Milwaukee.

"If (the other team) is L.A., he lives out there," Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said. "All we can do is give it our best shot and see what happens."

Hoffman’s agent, Rick Thurman, is evaluating offers from both teams. The Dodgers are rumored to be offering a one-year deal with a team option for 2010 — Hoffman is 41 years old, nobody is going to be offering more than one year guaranteed.

Any contract likely will be in the $4 million or a little more range. That is the offer the Padres had on the table for their legend until the owners looked at their stock portfolio in November and pulled the offer. Now the Dodgers are stepping into the void.
