Lakers Announce Coaching Staff, Summer League Roster

The Los Angeles Lakers expect to draw in big crowds in NBA Summer League

On Friday morning, the Los Angeles Lakers officially announced the hiring of Assistant Head Coach Brian Shaw and Assistant Coach Jesse Mermuy and also confirmed that Mark Madsen would be retained as an assistant on the bench.

Shaw is the lead assistant on the staff, a role that Walton held during his final year in Golden State. Shaw also served as an assistant with the Lakers during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, when Walton collected his two rings as a player. In addition, Shaw played with the Lakers from 2000 to 2002, when LA completed a three-peat with Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant leading the way.

Murmeys was previously with the Toronto Raptors organization and served as Head Coach of the Raptors 905, Toronto's D-League affiliate, and led the team to a postseason run in 2016. Murmeys also served as an assistant coach with Toronto under Dwane Casey form 2013 to 2015 and previously coached the Raptors' Summer League teams in 2014 and 2016.

As such, Mermuys will serve as the Head Coach of the Lakers' 2016 Summer League squad, with Madsen and Casey Owens as assistant coaches. LA also announced its roster for the 2016 NBA Summer League, where no. 2 pick Brandon Ingram should get his first taste of competition alongside teammates D'Angelo Russell and Larry Nance Jr.

The marquee game of the Las Vegas Summer League session should occur on July 9, when Ingram and the Lakers take on the Philadelphia 76ers, who drafted the no. 1 pick in 2016, Ben Simmons. A year ago, the Lakers filled the Thomas & Mack Center and forced a new section of the stands to be opened and make accommodations. Saturday's game expects to cause the same scene.

Also on the Lakers' Summer League roster is second round pick, Ivica Zubac. Zubac still has a great deal to prove before he makes the Lakers' regular season roster, so the Summer League is a major test for the 19-year-old Croatian.

The Lakers' Summer League team will hold its first practice on Tuesday, July 5 at the Toyota Sports Center, and the team will also officially introduce Zubac and Ingram as Lakers on the same day, at the same location.
