Los Angeles Dodgers Feast on Five Home Runs, Pound San Diego Padres 8-4

The Los Angeles Dodgers feasted on five home runs in the first six innings and pounded on the Padres 8-4 on Friday night at Petco Park in San Diego.

The Los Angeles Dodgers feasted on five home runs in the first six innings and pounded on the Padres 8-4 on Friday night at Petco Park in San Diego.

Carl Crawford, Scott Schebler, Justin Ruggiano, Adrian Gonzalez and Chase Utley all went deep for the Dodgers in a game that featured eight long balls in a supposed "non-hitters" park.

"Obviously, the ball was jumping out of the ballpark tonight," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "You just don't see that many home runs here, but they all seemed to be hit pretty good."

Former Dodger, Matt Kemp, Jedd Gyorko, and Brett Wallace also homered for San Diego as the Dodgers bounced back from a wild game a night earlier to hang on to their lead in this one.

Crawford opened up the game with a solo shot to right field, his third of the year, giving the Dodgers the early lead.

It would not last long however, as Kemp hit a two-run shot off Dodgers starter Mike Bolsinger to put the Padres in front 2-1. The homer was Kemp's 200th of his career and gave him 89 RBIs on the year, the most he's hit since 2011 when he knocked in 126 runs.

Kemp also extended his career-long on-base streak to 24 games, the longest active streak in the National League and the third longest streak in the Majors behind Edwin Encarnacion and Joe Mauer.

Bolsinger (6-3) made his return to the mound for Los Angeles for the first time since July 29th against Oakland. He picked up right where he left off, mixing various breaking balls, allowing three runs on two hits with six strikeouts in five innings.

"It's fun to get that win," Bolsinger said. "It was a good team win, and it was nice for me to keep the team in the ballgame."

Scott Schebler tied the game at two, with his first career homer in the top half of the second inning. The solo shot was launched off of San Diego starter James Shields who struggled throughout the game.

"It was nice to hit my first homer off Shields," Schebler said of his first round tripper. "You hear about him all the time, and I know how good he is. I knew he wasn't going to give me much to hit, and he gave me a good pitch to hit."

Shields allowed three runs on three hits with four strikeouts and a career-high six batters over five innings in a no-decision. Shields remains 1-0 against the Dodgers in his career.

Gyorko thought he had hit a double off the wall in left-center in the bottom of the third inning, but after a replay review, the umpires ruled that a fan had interfered with the ball, deflecting it off the wall. The call was reversed and Gyorko was awarded a bizarre home run.

"I looked at the replay, saw it, and said to myself 'just move on to the next guy'," Bolsinger said of the homer. "I had people call me and tell me otherwise, but what can you do?"

The Dodgers were the victims of another terrible call by a second base umpire. In the top of the 5th inning, while the Padres were trying to turn a double play, Gyorko received the ball five feet off the bag, but the umpire still ruled the runner Chase Utley, out on the play.

One night after recording his first two hits in the big leagues, rookie phenom, Corey Seager moved from eighth to fifth in the Dodgers starting lineup. Seager started at third base for the first time in his career and tied the game at 3-3 with a ground ball to second with the bases loaded in the fifth inning.

An inning later, Justin Ruggiano, who was acquired by the Dodgers from the Seattle Mariners at the waiver trade deadline, hit a two-run go-ahead homer off of Marc Rzepczynski that put the Dodgers ahead 5-3. The homer was Ruggiano's first as a Dodger and third this season.

Adrian Gonzalez followed three batters later with a blast to left-center. Gonzalez's 26th homer of the year put Los Angeles up 7-3, but the Boys in Blue were not finished as Chase Utley followed with a solo strike to right field and the Dodgers went back-to-back for the fifth time this year.

"Those home runs really gave us a little bit of a cushion," Mattingly said. "We just kept going from there."

After five seasons spent in San Diego, Gonzalez enjoys playing his former team. The left-hand hitting first baseman is hitting .345 with four doubles, seven home runs and 16 RBIs in just 14 games against them this season.

Kenley Jansen came into the game in the bottom of the ninth in a no-save situation and worked a perfect inning of relief.

The Dodgers victory combined with the Giants loss in Colorado, extends LA's lead in the NL West to 7.5 games.

Game Notes:
The eight home runs ties the ballpark record for the most ever hit in a single game at Petco Park.

The Dodgers also stole three bases in the game. It was the first time Los Angeles had 5 homers and three steals in the same game since Sept. 2, 2002.
