That's not the actual dog Robitaille adopted. It's actually not a dog at all.

Luc Robitaille was doing just fine in the generosity department.

Then came Friday's visit to LA City Hall.

The former LA King was there at the request of the council so they could praise his hockey career and the work he does for children and families in need.

But Robitaille couldn't leave it at that.

After the council meeting, he immediately adopted the city's "Dog of the Week." Councilman Herb Wesson brought the dog to City Hall in an effort to encourage adoptions.

It worked.

The dog -- Carter (pictured, right) -- now has a new home with the LA Kings' president of business operations. Not bad for a dog who was headed back to the shelter.

Robitaille finished as the NHL's highest-scoring left wing and became a first-ballot Hall of Famer. Not bad for a guy drafted 171st in 1984.

Score one for the underdogs.
