Maroney, the world champion, finished with a score of 15.083. She scored a 15.866 with a soaring first vault, but came up short on her second and slipped on the landing.

Maroney, 16, had posted the best qualifying score entering the competition.

Her fall on the second vault, which prompted a gasp from the surprised crowd, resulted in a score of 14.3.

Sandra Izbasa won gold for Romania. Maria Paseka, of Russia, won bronze.

Maroney's 16.233 on the vault in team competition -- the night's best score -- was a major reason why the U.S. won team gold last week.
