Vandals Take Swing at Red Sox Mickey

It's the happiest place on earth, unless you're a giant mouse in a Red Sox uniform

Just when you thought the Red Sox-Angels rivalry couldn't get any worse, someone has attacked Mickey Mouse.

A sports fan with an unhealthy fixation on the Red Sox or possibly someone entirely disengaged from sports and just looking for an excuse to damage property vandalized the statue of Red Sox Mickey in Santa Ana. It's one of the 7 1/2-foot tall Mickey Mouse statues installed to celebrate the All-Star Game, which is coming to Angel Stadium.

The statue was placed in front of Discovery Science Center earlier this month. A spokeswoman for the center said the statue was removed by Major League Baseball "for repairs."

"There is a crack in one of the arms and some damage to the baseball Mickey is holding," Matt Bourne, a spokesman for Major League Baseball, told the OC Register.

Thirty-six giant mice statues that represent Major League Baseball teams and themes were positioned around LA, Orange and San Bernardino counties in the run-up to the July 13 All-Star game at Angel Stadium. Other statue locations include Angel Stadium, Anaheim City Hall, Downtown Disney, the Kodak and El Capitan Theatres, L.A. Live and the Hollywood Walk of Fame area.

Bourne said the statue might be returned to the Discovery Science Center if it can be repaired.
