Saints Are Still Dangerous

0-4, not down and out

The Chargers take on the Saints Sunday night in New Orleans.

New Orleans comes into this game 0-4. The Bolts are 3-1.

But inside that 0-4 record is a play-off winning, Super Bowl contending team just clawing for the chance to climb from the dungeon of low expectations.

Quarterback Drew Brees, a former Charger, is the most dangerous aspect this team has. He leads the league in passing yards at 1,350. And, he is second only to Detroit’s Matthew Stafford in passes completed with 110.

Chargers defense has been transitioning from the run-happy Kansas City team to the sky-loving Saints offense, led by Brees. They brought up cornerback Chris Carr to try and create more depth in cornerback position.

Cornerback Quentin Jammer knows that this week will mean a lot of eyes focused on him and the rest of the CBs.

“It’s always exciting,” Jammer said. “It’s always fun to get into games where you have a quarterback like Drew and some of the weapons he has because they put the ball up for you 50 times and you’re going to have opportunities to get interceptions and make plays. It’s good, old-fashioned, and a great game.”

With such an offense it’s hard to believe the Saints haven’t won a game, including a game against Kansas City in Week 3.

But if you look on the other side of the ball, the reason behind their record becomes a little clearer.

New Orleans has allowed more yards (1.853) than any other team this season. That averages out to about 463 yards per game.

Despite the dismal defensive statistics, Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is taking this game as seriously as if they were 4-0.

“They’ve been in every game,” Rivers said. “It’s a tough, resilient group. There’s not going to be any quit or doubt in any of their minds. So we’re going to have to play our best game to win.”

Head coach Norv Turner is of the same take-nothing-for-granted, don’t-count-anybody-out mentality.

“The biggest thing when you have a team that’s had the success this team’s had it’s not an 0-4 football team,” Turner said. “It’s not a team that’s rebuilding, it’s not a team that’s starting over from a coaching staff standpoint it’s a team that’s accomplished an awful lot. They’ve got a lot of pride, a lot of great players and we’ve got to go in there and play our best because I know we’re going to get their best.”

Chargers kick off Sunday night at 5:20 PST on NBC.
