Spurs Extend Streak to 42 Games in 108-87 Blowout of Clippers

The San Antonio Spurs blew out the Los Angeles Clippers 108-87 on Tuesday night to extend their home winning-streak to a franchise record 42 straight games.

SAN ANTONIO – For the second consecutive game in San Antonio, the Los Angeles Clippers gave the Spurs everything they had for three quarters. But for the second straight time, San Antonio pulled away in the fourth quarter and extended their home winning-streak to 42 games.

The Clippers became the only team to have a lead against San Antonio in the fourth quarter at home, and they have done it twice now. However, the Spurs went on a 13-2 run after LA took the lead and never looked back, leading by as many as 21 points down the stretch.

The game started off on a defensive note with both teams not giving up anything to each other. After a see-saw battle, the Clippers clung to a 21-19 lead entering the second quarter.

San Antonio began to pull away in the second frame, but Chris Paul was a one-man wrecking crew, scoring at will against the Spurs, and keeping the Clippers close entering the break.

The Clippers came back in the third quarter, and briefly took a 70-69 lead before Kyle Anderson's buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter gave the Spurs the lead entering the fourth and final frame.

But the streak was not meant to end on this night as the Spurs dominated the fourth quarter 37-17, improving to 33-0 at home this season. Kawhi Leonard led the Spurs with 20 points and three steals.

Once again, the Clippers were outrebounded 42-to-27 and only had 15 assists to the Spurs 25. Chris Paul lead all scorers with a game-high 22 points and eight assists. DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 14 rebounds as no other Clipper had more than four rebounds in the game.

Players of the Game:

Chris Paul – 22 points, eight assists and three steals.
DeAndre Jordan – 16 points and 14 rebounds
Kawhi Leonard – 20 points and three steals.

Three Takeaways:

1. There's No Place Like Home: The Spurs extended their home winning-streak to a franchise record 42 straight games. The record is the third longest in NBA history behind the Golden State Warriors current streak of 49 and the 95-96 Chicago Bulls with 44. Ironically, the last team to beat the Spurs on their home floor was the Los Angeles Clippers last season.

2. CP3 Crosses Up Patty Mills: Chris Paul is one of the smartest players in the NBA. He's notorious for stopping on a dime and allowing the defenders to run him over in order pick up a call. But at the end of the first quarter, he moved to brainiac status when he acutely recognized that his defender, Patty Mills, only had one shoe on. CP3 quickly crossed him over and scored in the paint.

3. Can I get an Encore?: The Los Angeles Clippers and San Antonio Spurs met in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs last season and the seven-game series that ended on a Chris Paul game-winner in game 7 easily made it the best series of the 2015 NBA Playoffs. The home team has won every game of the regular season series, with the Clippers losing on Tuesday night without Blake Griffin and Paul Pierce. This would make a great second round 2016 NBA Playoff series or Western Conference Finals. Here's hoping it happens.
