Wild Donkeys Found in Riverside Up for Adoption

A herd of about 40 wild donkeys was spotted in Riverside by a new Metrolink project, and spurring officials to try to find them forever homes ahead of the holidays.

Animal control officers rounded up 19 of the burros, though about 40 were found roaming free near Marlborough and Rustin Avenues.

Though the burros are wild, they seem very docile, the news release stated.

Officials said this likely comes from a long-standing tradition where people passing by feed them carrots, apples and other treats.

The feeding has been drawing the donkeys closer to the Metrolink project in the Highgrove area.

"We know that people have been feeding the burros for many years," Animal Services field Commander Rita Gutierrez said in a statement. "That’s why, in our shelter, the burros are exhibiting a docile behavior. They are very easy to be around and approach. You can pet some of them without the animal getting skittish."

Although the animals are docile, it doesn't mean they'll be a walk in the park for future adopters. It would be similar to "breaking a wild horse."

"Can they be domesticated? Yes, but it’ll take a lot of effort and time," Gutierrez said. "Eventually they can become very tame."

Donkeyland Rescue, a nonprofit sanctuary for injured donkeys, took in two of the younger burros, along with a female.

Interested in having one for yourself? Adoption fees for the donkeys are $50.

Adopters should be zoned in an area where it is legal to own livestock, and animal control recommends visiting the shelter in person.
