Meet the NBC4 Digital Team

Sara Catania

Sara Catania is the Vice President of Digital for NBC4 Southern California, where she oversees all of the station's digital offerings, including web, social media and mobile. Previously she was the Editorial Director of Digital for the station. Under her leadership the station won its first-ever national Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, for coverage of breaking news. Prior to that she was a regional editor at AOL's hyperlocal Patch.com, where she spearheaded the Southern California operation, launching the first sites in the state and guiding the establishment of the brand in the region. Catania was a reporter at the Los Angeles Times, where she contributed to the Pulizter Prize-winning coverage of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. She has worked as a reporter at the LA Daily News, and a staff writer for the LA Weekly. She has a Masters in Journalism from UC Berkeley and is the recipient of a John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship from Stanford University.


Jonathan Lloyd

Jonathan Lloyd is the Managing Editor of NBC4 Southern California where he has been a member of the digital team since 2004. Before joining NBC4, he was a web editor at NBCConnecticut.com and a reporter for two Minnesota newspapers, Sun Newspapers and the Mankato Free Press.

Jason Kandel

Jason Kandel is a Senior Digital Producer for NBC4 Southern California. He is an award-winning journalist who has covered news in Southern California for 15 years. He's been a reporter at Thomson Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, the Los Angeles Daily News and the Long Beach Press-Telegram. He's been an online editor at dailynews.com and Southern California Public Radio. He's won Los Angeles Press Club awards for breaking news and online news projects, including for coverage of the 2009 Station Fire.

 Willian Avila

Willian Avila is a Digital Producer at NBC4 Southern California. He has worked in print and digital journalism for several years, most recently as an online news producer at ABC7 Los Angeles. He also co-authored an investigative report at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and reported for The Desert Sun in Palm Springs. He is a Los Angeles native and graduated from UC Berkeley.

Christina Cocca

Christina CoccaChristina Cocca is a Digital Producer and Internship Coordinator for NBC4 Southern California. She first joined the digital team as an intern in Spring 2013 before graduating from California State University, Northridge, where she was the news editor for the Daily Sundial. Cocca was a foreign multimedia journalist in Perpignan, France, as well as a supplemental instruction leader at CSUN, where she taught English to college freshmen. Her news writing has won awards from the California Newspaper Publishers Association, California College Media Association and Los Angeles Press Club.

 Andrew Lopez

Andrew Lopez is a Digital Producer at NBC4 Southern California. He previously worked as a reporter at the Ventura County Star, where he covered breaking news, reported on schools and worked on the website and mobile app. Before that, he interned at KPCC, reporting and producing multimedia for their downtown Los Angeles blog, blogdowntown. He is a graduate of California State University, Northridge, where he worked as the online editor of the campus newspaper, The Daily Sundial.

Samia Khan

Samia Khan is a Digital Producer at NBC4 Southern California. Prior to that, she co-founded "Instacurity", an online movement that satirically addresses society’s obsession with social media. She was video blogger at the 2010 Winter Olympics for Samsung, hosted “SGNL,” Sony’s tech show, and covered entertainment for the TV Guide Network in Los Angeles. Khan started her career as a TV news reporter at ABC-affiliates in Springfield, MA and Bakersfield, CA. She is a graduate of USC’s Annenberg School for Communciation and Journalism.
