Fisher-Price and the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission are voluntarily recalling the Rock ‘N Play Infant Sleepers because of risk of exposure to mold.
The warning applies to 800,000 infant recliner seats sold at stores nationwide and online since September 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Tuesday.
Fisher-Price has received 600 reports of mold on the sleeper product. The toy and baby gear company advises all consumers to immediately inspect the product and stop using it if mold is found.
Mold can develop between the removable seat cushion and hard plastic flame of the sleeper when it remains wet or if it is infrequently cleaned, the CPSC said.
Mold has been associated with respiratory illnesses and other infections. Sixteen consumers have reported that their infant have been treated for respiratory issues, coughs and hives after sleeping on the Rock ‘N Play Sleep, the agency said.
CPSC recommends consumers check for dark brown, gray or black spots that can indicate the presence of mold under the removable seat cushion. If mold is found, consumers are advised to stop using the product and can contact Fisher-Price for cleaning instructions or further assistance. Cleaning and care instructions may also be found on the Fisher-Price website.
Warnings do not apply to sleepers currently sold in retail stores, but mold can occur after use.
