Funeral services for Carnell Snell Jr., who was fatally shot by police in South Los Angeles last weekend, were held at noon Saturday.

The officer involved shooting occurred at 1 p.m. last Saturday at 107th Street and Western Avenue.

Police were trying to stop Snell for driving a light blue Nissan with paper plates that did not match the year of the car, prompting officers to suspect it may have been stolen.

"Officers observed a vehicle that had paper plates that could be possibly stolen," LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery said. "They initiated or attempted to initiate an investigative stop. That vehicle failed to yield and the officers showed themselves in pursuit."

Snell, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene and a .40-caliber handgun was recovered a few feet from his body. No officers were injured.

Security video of the chase, taken from a nearby business, shows Snell running with his left hand in a sweatshirt pocket, and at one point he removeshis hand to reveal a handgun. He holds the gun at his side briefly, then tucks it in his waistband, turns and runs away from the camera, out of sight, with officers in pursuit.

In the days since the shooting, activists have held protests at the scene, outside Mayor Eric Garcetti's residence in Hancock Park and during a meeting of the Los Angeles Police Commission.

Snell's service was held at First AME Church of Los Angeles, 2270 S. Harvard Blvd. It was open to the public.
