Iron News Man
I’m as ready for the Surf City Half Marathon as I’m going to be. This race is meant to be a tune-up on my way to the LA Marathon in late March. I ran the Inaugural 13.1 Los Angeles in January in 1:49. I’m curious to see how fast I’ll run this half marathon. I had expected to be lighter, but I’m more muscular and thus heavier. I’ll know by my finish time at Surf City if I’m tracking for a nice LA Marathon run.
The weather for Surf City is going to border on ideal… border being the key word. 58 degrees is generally considered the optimum temp for a road race. The forecast from NBC4 Meteorologist Elita Loresca calls for a start time temp in the upper-40s to mid-50s. It will also be cloudy and drizzly. So my legs will feel fresh, but I expect to wear thin running gloves and a long sleeve athletic pullover.
Though Surf City is only two days away, I still have Ironman training! Admittedly, none of it involves running. Here’s my schedule for today:
Swim 3000-yards
That distance puts me well over the 70.3 Ironman swim. I love knowing that I’m training at a fitness level that keeps me ready for any triathlon short of a full Ironman. It’s a heady feeling to not only think, but also know I could wake up tomorrow and tackle a tough event. Not arrogance, confidence. We’ll see how confident I am post-Surf City?

Why blog? To inspire others.
Simply put, three years ago I was overweight! At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants. Few people really noticed, but I did. In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance. Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw. Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.
No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed numerous events. Among the big ones: the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach, 2009 LA Marathon, 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3, and 2009 Ironman Arizona!
I invite you to share this journey with me.
