Iron News Man - January 29, 2010

Time to swim like a fish!  Not since before Ironman Arizona have I put in as much pool time as I plan today.  It’s really not that far, but it’s still substantial.  It’s also needed since nagging injuries have my right arch, right shin, and both knees aching.  Hitting the water will continue to build my fitness while not stressing those injured body parts too much.

Tomorrow my schedule calls for an 80-mile ride followed by a 3-mile run.  I better eat my Wheaties!

Here’s my Ironman South Africa training schedule for today:

Swim 2500-yards

Weight train biceps and triceps

Photos and Videos

Road to Ironman Triathlon

More Photos and Videos

I do the swim at LA Fitness Valencia, the head directly to Jordan’s Virtual Fit Club for the weight training.  When my cardio is limited to swimming only, I have the energy to hit the weights harder and that’s EXACTLY what I plan to do!

My blog of the week features a friend I’ve gotten to know since entering the world of triathlon.  His name is Jim Lubinski and frankly, the guy is a rising star in the world of triathlon!  The thing that strikes me about Jim is his humility.  I was a rank beginner when he introduced himself.  Jim has always been patient, kind, and encouraging whenever I’ve spoken with him about my own goals for triathlon while never once being condescending.  I wish Jim well and I’m proud to know him (before he becomes a triathlon rock star). My upcoming race schedule (so far) for 2010:

Surf City Half Marathon

Students Run LA Friendship Run

Toyota Desert International Triathlon (Olympic Distance)

LA Marathon

Ironman South Africa

Why blog? To inspire others.

Simply put, three years ago I was overweight!  At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants.  Few people really noticed, but I did.  In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance.  Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw.  Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.

No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed numerous events.  Among the big ones: the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach, 2009 LA Marathon, 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3, and 2009 Ironman Arizona!

I invite you to share this journey with me.
