Iron News Man
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
I’m anxious early! I have not been sleeping well for the past few nights and I know why. The LA Marathon is weighing on me heavily. Like most runners, I worry about my preparation. I worry if I’ll disappoint myself with a poor time? I wonder if I’ll cramp up?
Here’s what I know, worry is normal! Sunday’s LA Marathon will be my fifth 26.2-mile race (counting the run inside of Ironman Arizona). Before every sizeable and meaningful race I’ve had these concerns. So I guess it’s fair to say I don’t worry about my worrying. Go figure. Perhaps at some point I’ll manage a decent night of sleep. At least I know come Sunday night, I’ll sleep like a baby!
My training for today is about as simple as it gets during a taper week:
Swim 1000-yards
Weight train back/shoulders
The LA Fitness in Valencia is closed for remodeling so I plan to complete the swim at the other LA Fitness location in the Canyon Country section of Santa Clarita. After that, it’s over to Jordan’s Virtual Fit Club for the weight training.
As we approach the LA Marathon, I wanted to highlight a blog that tackles an important and needed subject. CLICK HERE to read the Nautica Fitness Blog written by Andy Baldwin. In it, he tackles the important endurance sport topic of preventing cramping during exercise.
Also, sorry there’s no Wakeup Workout Video today. We had Breaking News all morning of the Pico Rivera Earthquake (no one hurt and damage was minor thankfully). It should return tomorrow.

My race schedule (so far) for 2010:
13.1 Los Angeles (Half) Marathon
Students Run LA Friendship Run
Wildflower Triathlon (long course)
Ironman World Championships????
Why blog? To inspire others.
Simply put, three years ago I was overweight! At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants. Few people really noticed, but I did. In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance. Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw. Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.
No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed numerous events. Among the big ones: the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach, 2009 LA Marathon, 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3, and 2009 Ironman Arizona!
I invite you to share this journey with me.
