“There is no room in your mind for negative thoughts. The busier you keep yourself with the particulars of shot assessment and execution, the less chance your mind has to dwell on the emotional. This is sheer intensity.” - Jack Nicklaus
Let me start by saying GOOD LUCK to everyone competing in this weekend’s Toyota Desert International Triathlon! One year ago it was my first triathlon and it marks a special place along my Ironman journey. Here’s what I remember specifically, the water at Lake Cahuilla was bone chilling cold. Be sure to get your warm-up swim in before the race starts to avoid a negative reaction. Also, the bike portion starts on a short uphill, so be in a gear you can handle. Otherwise, the race is flat and truly a great way to start the triathlon 2010 season!
As inspiration to all of you I’ve re-posted within this blog a video story about Kyle Garlett. When things get a little sticky or hard out there on race day, think of Kyle and realize you’re blessed! No matter what obstacle you face I can guarantee it’s not greater than what Kyle has faced. Watch the video and realize that “I can” is 100 times more powerful than “I think”!
My LA Marathon training today consists of swim today and a medium run tomorrow. Here’s my schedule exactly for the next couple of days:
Today: Swim 2000-yards
Tomorrow: Run 11-miles
Sunday: Rest day
Many of you are quite fond of Lunges and how they shape legs. Today’s Wakeup Workout video demonstrates (thanks to Certified Trainer Carla Porter) Side Lunges… another way to enjoy the ever-popular Lunge with great results! Just click on the video and learn the correct form.

Wildflower Triathlon (long course)
Ironman World Championships????
Why blog? To inspire others.
Simply put, three years ago I was overweight! At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants. Few people really noticed, but I did. In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance. Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw. Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.
No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed numerous events. Among the big ones: the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach, 2009 LA Marathon, 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3, and 2009 Ironman Arizona!
I invite you to share this journey with me.
