Iron News Man

Highlight of my day… getting chased by Pitbull and a Chihuahua!  Those two suckers were fast, but not as fast as me while riding Highway 126 in northern LA County for my double-brick workout.  I first spotted them out of the corner of my eye while passing a farm.  It seemed like they meant business (at least the Pit did) so my natural reaction was to peddle as fast as possible and they dropped off as I started to go a up a hill.  I can laugh about it now… but that was my first brush with an animal while riding and it could have been a negative experience.

As for the double-brick itself (ride, run, ride, run)… it went well.  I spent a bit more time doing each part than was called for in the schedule.  Instead of 60-minute rides, they were more like 1:15.  The runs were more like 30-minutes instead of 20.  On the bike, it was a matter of reaching a safe and suitable turn-around spot along Highway 126.  As for the run… I just felt good so I stretched that part of the brick out a bit.

Today is a rest day.  It’s needed as part of my Ironman Arizona training, but it’s driving me nutty!  Here’s my TrainingPeaks.com schedule from Triathlon Coach Jason Healey:

Workout Description:

Rest Day. Take the day off and rest. Try to stay off your legs as much as possible. Watch your nutrition. Try to eat healthy carbs, lean proteins and good fats. If possible take the time to stretch and work on core strength.

I already know how I’ll spend this rest day, light chores around the house.  I have company coming to town for the holidays and this will give me a jump on getting ready for them.  Ironman Arizona has had me focused on nothing else but training.  My running coach Craig Moss is worried I’ll go nuts once I complete Ironman and rest for a while with nothing to train for.  As a result, we’re putting some strategies together for post IM Arizona.  In fact, I already have some goals beyond this immediate goal in mind… but I’ll share those goals post race :)

Are you working biceps correctly?  Staying, "in the muscle" when you train?  Do you even know how to do that?  Be sure to click on today's Wakeup Workout featuring trainer Jordan Yuam and his client Kathy Kim!

Why blog? To inspire others.

Simply put, two years ago I was overweight!  At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants.  Few people really noticed, but I did.  In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance.  Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw.  Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.

No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach, 2009 LA Marathon, and the 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3.

However, something happened along the way.  After my first marathon, I fell into a funk.  I asked myself,  “Why do you feel such a let-down after a marvelous achievement?”  The answer I have since learned from my coaches, I failed to set the “goal beyond the goal”.  Thus, my quest for Iron was born!

I’m registered to compete in the Ford Ironman Arizona on November 22nd, 2009.  Along the way, I will compete in various road races and triathlons to fuel my passion and push my training along.  The intense and at times brutal training will happen after my duties as 4 a.m. to 7a.m. anchor for NBC4 have finished. The sacrifices I will make will be substantial, and for that I thank my beautiful family and friends in advance.

I invite you to share this journey with me.
