“Pain is life -- the sharper, the more evidence of life.”Charles Lamb

So I have no idea what I was thinking!  I’ve ridden the Santa Clarita Trail dozens of times!  By the time I realized I was going too fast to successfully navigate the turn, it was too late.  So, for the second time in as many years I crashed into a wooden ranch style fence.  The difference between now and July of last year… speed.  I was only going maybe 15 miles per hour (perhaps slower when I hit the brakes).  However, the same shoulder I separated a year ago went slamming into the fence.  My fear of a repeat injury was squashed when I picked myself up.  Nothing broken… not even the bike.  So, beat up, scratched up I finished my two hour ride this morning before work.

Here’s my official Ford Ironman World Championship training schedule for today:

Ride 2 hours/30 miles flat

The crash came at the end of my training.  I’m thankful no one had to come pick me up and I’m thankful I was not seriously hurt (see picture above, that’s the worst of my scrapes).

When I competed in Ironman 70.3 Boulder last weekend I had the chance to meet Champion Professional Triathlete Tim O’Donnell.  I will always remember his simple advice, “Make every workout count!”  Thanks Tim!  Despite a crash today, I feel like I did just that!

Why blog? To inspire others.

Simply put, three years ago I was overweight!  At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants.  Few people really noticed, but I did.  In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance.  Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw.  Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.

No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed numerous events.  Among the big ones: the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 & 2010 Surf City Marathons in Huntington Beach, 2009 & 2010 LA Marathons, 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3, 2010 Wildflower Long Course and 2009 Ironman Arizona!

I invite you to share this journey with me.
