"Make every workout count!" Tim O'Donnell
The Hansen Dam Tri went well. My time 1:09:05 was not impressive for a sprint triathlon. What made it so successful was my choice to not wear a wetsuit. I train without a wetsuit, but I've never competed without one. I can say my swim time was poor (over 13 minutes for only 600 yards), but what I learned was hugely beneficial. Instead of starting at my normal swim pace... I should begin slowly, then build speed. I wasted time recovering from overexerting myself too early and having to rest. It's an important lesson as I approach the Ford Ironman Wolrd Championship in Kailua - Kona in less than seven weeks! For the record, I finished 12th out of 47 competitors in yesterday's Hansen Dam Tri. A better swim, and that would have been top 10.
Here's my Ironman training for today:
Run 15-miles
Weight train shoulders and back
I'll use the Santa Clarita Trail for my run. I focus on form and a medium pace. I expect to finish the distance in 2:15-2:30 at the most. Despite all the racing I've been doing lately, I think my body will hold up. After that, I hit the weights at Jordan's Virtual Fit Club.

Simply put, three years ago I was overweight! At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants. Few people really noticed, but I did. In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance. Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw. Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.
No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed numerous events. Among the big ones: the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 & 2010 Surf City Marathons in Huntington Beach, 2009 & 2010 LA Marathons, 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3, 2010 Wildflower Long Course and 2009 Ironman Arizona!
I invite you to share this journey with me.
