“A professional is someone who can do his best work when he doesn’t feel like it.” – Alistair Cooke
First, forgive me for not posting routinely Monday through Friday. My Weekend Anchor schedule has really changed my schedule. While it’s more difficult to blog before I train and then head of to work and report, I’ll do my best to hit the keyboard.
I have to awaken around 5:30am Wednesday through Friday to get in my training before I head into KNBC to report. It’s been a challenge, but that’s what being an Ironman is all about, taking on challenges.
Here was my Ironman 70.3 Boulder and Ford Ironman World Championship training before I stepped on the NBC lot in Burbank this morning:
5-mile hill run
Swim 1000-yards
I did both near my home before I tackled the morning commute. Here was the breakdown of my 2500-yard swim yesterday (planned by swim coach Chris Dahowski):
10x25 drill catch up. Think high elbow. Early catch and no S stroke. 10 second rest each 25
20x50 on 1 min interval hold :48 seconds for each one. This means 12 seconds rest then go on the minute
Swim easy 100. Yards focusing on technique.
Rest 1 min
8x100 on 2:15 interval. Hold a 1:45- 1:50 pace
4x25 no breath
100 easy swim cool down.
I leave for Ironman 70.3 Boulder in two weeks. I’m ready for the distance. I can be honest and say that I’m not ready for the altitude and the challenge it will bring. Sure that’s my hometown, but it’s been 10 years since I lived in beautiful Colorado. Since I’m not trying to crush that race, I’m not too worried about it. Having fun in my home town of Boulder and seeing life-long friends… that’s the priority!

Why blog? To inspire others.
Simply put, three years ago I was overweight! At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants. Few people really noticed, but I did. In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance. Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw. Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.
No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed numerous events. Among the big ones: the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 & 2010 Surf City Marathons in Huntington Beach, 2009 & 2010 LA Marathons, 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3, 2010 Wildflower Long Course and 2009 Ironman Arizona!
I invite you to share this journey with me.
