“Friendship is like a prism through which the many variations of beauty are revealed in our lives.” - Anonymous
When Jack Caress asked me to join the Board of the Kasier Permanente Los Angeles Triathlon earlier this year, I was truly honored. I know it’s not because I’m some great triathlete, rather I have become an ambassador for the sport. I can’t compete in this weekend’s Los Angeles Triathlon because I race less than a week later in the Ford Ironman World Championship and I don’t want to risk injury. What I can do is come out and support the race, and show others the beauty and passion of triathlon… pay it forward. One such opportunity is a local attorney named Chip Sloan. He’ll be shadowing me on race day, at both the swim transition and downtown locations.
The Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Triathlon is a premiere event! I’m saddened that I can’t race it this year, but I need to be smart and not take unnecessary risks so close to Ironman. Whether it’s the Sprint or the Olympic, conditions are set to be near perfect and I wish all racers well!
Today’s tape training for the Ford Ironman World Championship continues as planned (despite recovering from Bronchitis):
Swim 2600-yards (Intervals)
Warm up-200 yards
10 x 150 yards
10 x 25 yards (no breath)
6 x 100 yards
Cool down
I did the swim before I came into report this morning for KNBC-TV. What a great and positive way to start my day!

Why blog? To inspire others.
Simply put, three years ago I was overweight! At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants. Few people really noticed, but I did. In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance. Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw. Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.
No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed numerous events. Among the big ones: the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 & 2010 Surf City Marathons in Huntington Beach, 2009 & 2010 LA Marathons, 2009 Vineman Ironman 70.3, 2010 Wildflower Long Course and 2009 Ironman Arizona!
I invite you to share this journey with me.
