Actress Julie Andrews was honored Monday night at the Geffen Playhouse theater in Westwood.

She was presented with the Distinction in Theater Award as part of the theater's annual fundraiser, Backstage at the Geffen, which honors those who have made a significant contribution to the theater community.

The powerhouse entertainment agency CAA was also honored Monday night, with the Distinction in Service Award.

Andrews said the theater, to her, means bringing together the community.

"It's really a mirror in which we can see humanity and ourselves reflected. That's the theater," according to Julie Andrews, legendary actress.

And the actress has high praise for the Geffen Playhouse.

"This one is such a gem. It's really a special theater, because they really do new works, and they do such a wonderful outreach program for the children of the communities, all throughout Los Angeles, and (help) the elderly too," according to Andrews. "So it means they can come to a theater, and maybe they've never seen a play before, but the Geffen makes it possible

As a non-profit organization, the Geffen Playhouse uses the proceeds of the event to raise funds for the Geffen's "Stage for Any Age" programs, which help bring the excitement of live theater to 24,000 families and community members each year.
