The Plastic Bag is No More in Santa Monica

As of Wednesday Single Use Plastic Bags are Banned in Santa Monica

Single use plastic shopping bags can no longer be found in Santa Monica.

A new ban against their use went into effect on Wednesday.

Now supermarkets, convenience and liquor stores along with pharmacies can no longer hand out the single-use plastic bags, according to the L.A. Times, but recyclable paper bags are available for 10 cents apiece.

Department, clothing and hardware stores do not have to charge for their bags, the L.A. Times reports, but they are limited in the types of plastic bags they can offer their customers.

A six-month grace period will be in place before enforcement kicks in, according to the L.A. Times.

Fines will start at $75 per infraction.
