The awards recognize "the best in professional journalism" in print, radio, television, online and other categories.

NBC4’s digital team, including Olsen Ebright, Melissa Pamer, Samantha Tata, and Orange County Bureau Chief and general assignment reporter Vikki Vargas, were recognized for "Online Reporting" in the category of "Deadline Reporting" for their coverage of the campus lockdown at Cal State Fullerton in December 2012.

The coverage, entitled "All Clear: CSU Fullerton Lockdown Lifted,” included mutiple written stories, video, photo galleries, and extensive use of social media, including Facebook, Twitter and Storify.

Digital producers worked closely with on-air reporter Vargas to get the best possible coverage.

“Our goal every day is to deliver news that matters to our audience as it happens, to get it first and get it right, to engage on television as well as on all of our digital platforms,” said Sara Catania, editorial director of digital media for NBC4.

“This was one of those stories where everything came together, on air, on the web, on our apps and on social media," Catania said. "It’s wonderful for the team to be recognized for our dogged, detailed journalism.”

Judges selected 84 honorees from nearly 1,700 submissions nationwide. For a full list of award winners, please visit the Society of Professional Journalists website.
