Iron News Man - July 14th, 2009

Iron News Man

It’s getting to the point where it’s hard to focus on anything other than Vineman Ironman 70.3.  Work, chores, you name it… things are just slipping my mind in these remaining days before my greatest physical challenge on Sunday.  Thank goodness I have a checklist of all my triathlon gear or I’d certainly forget something!

My lower back is feeling much better than yesterday.  I’m honestly not sure why it feels better?  I had a solid run and weight workout so maybe the high heat did me some good.  Who knows? Who cares?  I feel better and that’s all that matters.

Here’s my TrainingPeaks.com schedule for today from Triathlon Coach Jason Healey:

Pyramid
Type: Swim
Planned duration: 0:00
Planned distance: 2200.0 yards
Swim 2200 yrds total. Warm Up: Do an easy 4 x 50, 2 x 100.
Drills: 200 yrds. Choose drills from the Triathlon Training Series Swim DVD.
MS: 8 x 25 with 10" rest. Do every 4th 25 as fast as possible. Follow with 6 x 50 with 15” rest. Do every 3rd 50 as fast a possible. Finish with 8 x 75 wtih 20” rest. Do all 75's slow except for 3rd and 6th set. Do the 3rd and 6th as fast aspossible.
CD: 4 x 50, 8 x 25 easy with emphasis on form.
Concentrate on good form even during the hard efforts.

We’re still implementing and rehearsing with a new computer system here at NBC4.  It’ll require me to stay late today at work and I have my regularly scheduled weight training session with Jordan Yuam at 3pm.  I’ve arranged to get my swim training in between newscasts (thanks to my co-anchor Jennifer Bjorklund for covering one of my Today Show local news cut-ins :).  I’ll swim at the nearby LA Fitness Universal City.

Why blog? To inspire others.

Simply put, two years ago I was overweight!  At 6’1” I weighed 252, and wore size 40 pants.  Few people really noticed, but I did.  In pictures, on TV, I was not happy with my appearance.  Covering the 2007 LA Marathon for NBC4 was the last straw.  Every picture I was in highlighted just how out of shape I had become.

No more! Since that time, the guy who could barely run around the block has slowly built-up his endurance and completed the 2008 Long Beach International Marathon , 2009 Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach, and the 2009 LA Marathon.

However, something happened along the way.  After my first marathon, I fell into a funk.  I asked myself,  “Why do you feel such a let-down after a marvelous achievement?”  The answer I have since learned from my coaches, I failed to set the “goal beyond the goal”.  Thus, my quest for Iron was born!

I’m registered to compete in the Ford Ironman Arizona on November 22nd, 2009.  Along the way, I will compete in various road races and triathlons to fuel my passion and push my training along.  The intense and at times brutal training will happen after my duties as 4 a.m. to 7a.m. and 11 a.m. anchor for NBC4 have finished. The sacrifices I will make will be substantial, and for that I thank my beautiful family and friends in advance.

I invite you to share this journey with me.
