Patrick Healy is a general assignment reporter for NBC4's "Channel 4 News," a position he's held since April, 1984.
He's been a regular on the 11pm newscast for some two decades, making him the dean of LA's nightside reporters.
Apart from the breaking news his beat entails, Healy's reporting has focused on such consequential matters as privacy rights, public safety, energy, environmental issues, and the impact of new technologies. He's also an experienced courthouse reporter, having covered the criminal trials of Michael Jackson, OJ Simpson, and the police officers accused of excessive force in the landmark Rodney King case.
In recent years, Healy has been honored twice by the Los Angeles Press Club for outstanding Hard News Reporting (the 2003 Old Fire in the San Bernardino Mountains and the 2002 Cajon Wildfire). He's also been twice selected Top LA TV News reporter in online polls conducted by the "On the Record" Web site.
Previously, Healy had been nominated for an Emmy Award for his investigative reporting of medical malpractice in 1992. Healy was part of the team of Channel 4 News reporters who earned Golden Mike Awards in 1987 for their coverage of the Cerritos Air Disaster, and Local Area Emmy Awards a year earlier for their reporting of the arrest of the infamous "Night Stalker" suspect. Healy garnered best news writing awards in 1980 and 1981 from the California Associated Press Television and Radio Association, and two AP Certificates of Excellence for best miniseries and best spot news in 1980.
Prior to joining NBC4 Los Angeles, Healy covered energy issues, the Rajneesh cult, and the impact of the Mount St. Helens volcanic eruption during two years at KOIN-TV in Portland, OR. His career includes stints at two other Southern California television stations: KOCE, the Orange County Public Television Station, as a field reporter from 1980 to 1982; and KTTV as a news writer/producer from 1976 to 1980.
Healy graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in engineering, which he credits with helping him grasp the scientific and mathematical elements of stories he’s encountered over the years. It was at UCLA that he developed a passion for reporting, holding a series of positions at the Daily Bruin Newspaper, including city editor and managing editor, and was honored for his in-depth report on the University of California's nuclear weapons laboratories. He also worked for KLAC Radio and interned as a writer/reporter for the Los Angeles Times.
A mountain biker and distance runner, Healy likes to say he trains for marathons to stay in shape for the rigors of working the late shift. As a public speaker, Healy regularly emcees fundraising events for a variety of charitable causes and educational organizations, and especially enjoys those promoting health and fitness. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife and their daughters.
