Palm Springs Hosts Juried Art Show

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- A record number of art pieces were submitted for the city's 11th annual Juried Art Show, which highlights the work of Coachella Valley artists and continues through Jan. 30.
Artists submitted a total of 123 pieces. Twenty-five awards were presented Monday night during a ceremony at the Palm Springs Public Library.
"I want to congratulate the winners, but most importantly everyone who submitted," Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet said. "We had a 10 percent increase this year in submissions."
The "Best in Show" award was presented to Rancho Mirage resident Dennis Jory, former president of the Palm Springs Art Museum's Artist's Council. He was honored for his photograph of a young Mexican girl called "Boxed In," which is on display with the other submitted works at the library.
"I took it two years ago on a back street in Cabo," Jory said. "It was the last shot on my roll of film. I hadn't planned on submitting, but a friend talked me into it."
Last year's Best in Show winner, Robert Bradshaw, won a first-place prize this year for his painting "Sevilla, 1908."
Pieces on display at the library include original oil, water color, gouache, acrylic, mixed media, ink or charcoal, pastels, photography, collage, monotypes, works on paper, prints and digital and computer-generated images.
