Rough roads cost motorists $2,500 per year, according to a study

A study says LA's beat up roadways cost the average motorist about $2,500 per year.

The costs include accidents, congestion-related delays and wear-and-tear on vehicles, according to the report from The Road Information Program.

The study found 92 percent of LA's roads were in poor or mediocre condition. It goes on to list some of LA's worst roads -- it's a good bet you used one today.

Here are the five worst:

  • 5 Freeway from Route 39 to the LA County line in Buena Park
  • Highland Avenue from Santa Monica Boulevard to Franklin Avenue
  • Santa Monica Boulevard/Alvarado Street from La Brea/101 Freeway to Glendale Boulevard
  • Santa Monica Boulevard from Centinela Avenue to 405 Freeway
  • Venice Boulevard from Highway 1 to Sawtelle Boulevard.

 The study also looks at the condition of LA's bridges. It lists nine percent (362) of the 4,217 bridges in the LA area as structurally deficient. That means significant deterioration on the decks and major components.

Nearly 30 percent of the bridges were listed as "structurally obsolete."

TRIP also noted  that Los Angeles drivers endure the worst traffic congestion in the nation,  with 81 percent of major roadways experiencing significant rush ower delays  that cost the average commuter 70 hours per years stuck in traffic.

A total of 874 people died in Los Angeles-area traffic collisions in  2008, the report found.

In Riverside and San Bernardino counties, deteriorating and congested roads cost motorists an average of $2,076 a year.

According to the report, the worst stretches of road in the  Riverside/San Bernardino area are Route 74 from Seventh Street to Route 215 in  Perris and Euclid Avenue from Walnut Avenue in Ontario to Route 210 in Upland. The report also cited Route 74 between Lime Street in Lake Elsinore and  Elsinore and Perris; and Euclid Avenue between Bickmore and Merrill avenues in  Chino as being among the region's most deteriorated roadways.

The report also found that one-fourth of the area's bridges and  overpasses are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. It also noted  that 66 percent of major roadways in the region have significant rush hour  delays that cost the average commuter 44 hours per years stuck in traffic.

A total of 546 people died in Riverside/San Bernardino-area traffic  collisions in 2008, the report found.
