License Plate Stickers Will Soon Double

Get ready to pay more -- a lot more -- to register your car in California.

According to The Sacramento Bee, the DMV started notifying vehicle owners today about the fee hikes.  The fee is now 1.15% the value of your car.  For most, that means it will cost nearly double.

It's all part of the massive budget revision that was passed by the Legislature last month and signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.  They need the money to close the roughly $50 billion deficit.

All vehicles with a registration date of May 19 or later will have to pay the higher fees this year.

The California DMV has an online calculator to help you figure out the new registration costs.
