Mark Mothersbaugh explains the principles of Devo over two nights at the Fonda. Prepare to learn, humans.
DEVO: Two nights, two albums in their entirety, a metallic waterfall of punchy tunes delivered in high-energy fashion from the men in the plastic red hats. Tonight, which puts the focus on "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" is sold out, but "Freedom of Choice," tomorrow's show, still looks to have tickets. Both at the Fonda. By the way, Mark Mothersbaugh, live? Everyone everywhere pause and learn.
LA 101 FESTIVAL: Party's on the concourse at Gibson Amphitheatre. LA Weekly's the host. And the bands include Silversun Pickups, Dandy Warhols, Matt & Kim. Indie wunderkinds Silversun Pickups hail from Silver Lake; will they give the hometown a rousing shout-out? We hope. Also, a Silversun buff we know vows they can replicate the intensity of their records live. It'll be a show. 3PM
HOW MANY LICKS? A-one, a-two. You like that vintage Tootsie Pop commercial. You like the easy-lined but tremendously disciplined art of animator Fred Wolf, who was responsible for creating much of the loose-y look and feel of 1970s-era animation. We've been talking this one up. Cinefamily's doing a Fred Wolf night, with cartoon maestro Jerry Beck at the helm. A-threeee... 8PM
