Free Broad Stage Fest

The Broad Stage turns 5 with a free, kid-nice festival.

It's always that half-decade birthday that catches one by surprise.

When a favorite venue or dance troupe or restaurant or holiday event turns one? It feels like a year has passed, generally. But a fifth birthday has a way of sneaking up, if only because "half decade" sounds so weighty.

And the Broad Stage indeed has now been with us and entertaining us and presenting all sorts of interesting performance for a half decade. And, like all of the most awesome cultural institutions around town, it will celebrate its September birthday by giving back via a free festival.

Broad Fest unfurls on Saturday, Sept. 1 at, you guessed it, the Broad in Santa Monica. Music and dance and performance and interesting visual and aural things will be part of the pay-no-admission day, as will treats; the first 600 people to show get a "free sample" of Beachy Treats.

There will be interactive happenings as well, in case your tots get fidgety and want something to do that's more hands-on.

There will also be happenings at the nearby Edye, too, a Verdi chorus and acting and more, so be sure to take that in during the day.

Happy Birthday, Broad Stage. Five years. It'll be ten in a flash, and we'll be musing "how ever did time pass so fast?"
