Free and So Fa La La

The LA County Holiday Celebration marks its 52nd year.

There's a lot of twirling/jamming/harmonizing/strutting every year in our city. We can all agree on this, yes? Every night of the week someone is putting on a ballet recital or singing the blues or staging an interesting combo of both in venues across SoCaliana.

But, without a doubt, one of our city's most beloved stage shows falls at the close of the year, every year, as it has for the last 52 years. It's the LA County Holiday Celebration, the free gift from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to the community. And making it all the more spectacular? It's at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Snazzy pants.

How free is it? It's so free that even the parking is free. Honest? You don't see that every day. Bravo, county supervisors. Brav. O.

The three-hour Christmas Eve spectacular spotlights several local dance and music groups. Voices of Destiny Choir, Trumpetology, The Shpil, and Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez are all on this year's bill, but believe it: There are many diverse and delightful acts set to perform over the three hours. Your favorite type of song or dance will likely make a cameo.

Things we like: You can arrive when you wish and leave when you wish. You can arrive early for free activities -- Chinese Lion Dance! -- on Music Center Plaza. And you can enjoy the live stream at kcet.org, if you need to be home and in the kitchen on Dec. 24. Those snowman balls won't make themselves, we know, we know.

The 52nd Annual LA County Holiday Celebration is on Saturday, Dec. 24 from 3-6 p.m.
