Marilyn Monroe Statue: Construction Cranes Are a Girl’s Best Friend

A 40,000-pound, 26-foot tall statue of Marilyn Monroe striking her famous pose from "The Seven-Year Itch" will be assembled this week in Palm Springs after its journey from Chicago.

The "Forever Marilyn" statue, created by artist Seward Johnson, was broken down into four pieces so it could be transported from Chicago to Palm Springs for VillageFest. It is expected to take about four days to assemble at Palm Canyon Drive and Tahquitz Canyon Way.

First, the lower portion will be anchored in place. Then crews plan to add the torso and head with a crane.

This summer marks 50 years since Monroe's death on Aug. 5, 1962. She was 36.
