Tar Pits to Become Ice
LA landmarks become cold sculpture at the fair.

The La Brea Tar Pits have gotten famously fiery before, at least on film (hi, "Volcano"). But few of us ever associate blocks of misty ice and the bubbling lake of stickiness that is mucking up, marvelously, the Miracle Mile.
Those two disparate elements are going to unite in Pomona, thanks to the "LA in Ice" exhibit at the Los Angeles County Fair. The 2010 fair opens on Saturday, Sept. 4 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 3.
Artist Roland Hernandez will be behind the sculpting tools at this new fair exhibit. Besides rendering the tar pits in ice, Mr. Hernandez will be taking on Santa Monica Pier, the Chinese Theatre, and various insignia of local sports teams. Carver Mike Daukas will also be wielding the chainsaws.
Here's the bit that's charming us most, ahead of seeing the actual sculptures: LA County Fair will be providing blankets to guests who want to enter the cold space to admire the works.
Blankets in Pomona in September? Another first indeed.
