El Segundo Home to New Schat's Bakery

El Segundo is excited about soon-to-open bakery with rich family tradition

Schat’s Bakery is coming to El Segundo.

Practically a landmark in Bishop, Calif., Schat’s Bakery (now called Erick Schat's Bakery) has long been a required stop for travelers on their way home from a ski trip at Mammoth Mountain or for those just passing through the Owens Valley.

Legend has it that the origins of their Original Sheepherder’s Bread can be traced back to the requests of actual sheepherders at the turn of the 20th century for bread that would stay fresh while they were out with their flocks.

That was years before the 1950s, when a Holland immigrant named Jack Schat who worked in the bakery later bought the business and continued the tradition.

The family name has been used by Jack Schat’s descendants to open a number of successful bakeries in California and Nevada.

The newest bakery is currently under construction. David Schat’s Bakery Café is owned by Jack’s grandson, David Schat who recalls fond memories of his grandfather's bakery.

"On the weekends, bringing out those pans of cinnamon rolls out to the front and watching the customers just go 'oh those look great, I need those,'" he remembers. "That's why I'm doing what I'm doing."

The soon-to-open bakery is generating plenty of excitement among El Segundo’s business leaders.

“Lots of talk about it. I think it’s really going to be an anchor store downtown,” Marsha Hansen told the Daily Breeze.

The CEO of the El Segundo Chamber of Commerce expects the bakery to bring people into town.

“I think it’s going to be a real draw,” she said.
