Inmate Bus, Military Transport Vehicles Crash in Commerce

Both sides of the freeway were closed as inmates were transferred to another bus

A LA County inmate bus and three buses carrying military personnel were involved in a chain-reaction crash Thursday in Commerce.

A Los Angeles County fire inspector said eight people were injured in the crash. One person aboard the military transport bus was taken to a trauma center, fire officials said.

The crash on the northbound 5 Freeway near the Commerce Casino was reported to the CHP at about noon. Three military transport buses were traveling behind the inmate bus when the collision occurred, according to the sheriff's department.

The inmates were transferred to another LA County Sheriff's Department bus. Twenty-five inmates and two deputies were aboard the sheriff's department bus.  No deputies were hurt.

Authorities closed both sides of the freeway during the transfer.   All of the buses remained upright.

The southbound freeway reopened at about 1 p.m. Three lanes on the northbound freeway reopened at 1:30 p.m.

At least one other bus involved in the crash was carrying military personnel, according to fire officials.

Traffic backed up near East Washington Boulevard. Northbound traffic was backed up beyond the 605 Freeway during the closure.
