LAPD Needs Go-Ahead for Contract With Arizona Firm

The council will consider the exemption and a new contract with another Arizona firm

The Los Angeles Police Department wants Arizona-based red light camera contractors exempted from the city's boycott over Arizona's new immigration enforcement law.

The LAPD is asking for a 10-month extension of its agreement with Scottsdale-based American Traffic Solutions. The City Council considers the request, and a new contract with another Arizona-based firm, on Tuesday.

American Traffic Solutions operates cameras at 32 intersections.

The council's Public Safety Committee says the exception is justified.

Last month, the council suspended most travel and contracting with Arizona in protest over a law requiring police officers to determine the immigration status of people lawfully stopped.
