The Metropolitan Transportation Authority and several other municipal transit agencies will offer free bus and rail rides to bicyclists Thursday.

The offer is part of the 15th annual Bike to Work Day, an event aimed at coaxing commuters out of their cars and onto bicycles and public transit.   In addition to the free rides, bicyclists can enjoy free refreshments and prize giveaways at more than 40 designated "pit stops" throughout the county between 6 and 9 a.m., Metro officials said.

Bike riders were scheduled to gather at 8 a.m. on the plaza of the Civic Center Metro Red Line Station. The riders will bike to Los Angeles City Hall.
