Traffic Yam Slows Drive on 5 Freeway in Glendale

The big rig and its cargo caught fire just south of Western Avenue

A big rig hauling yams caught fire on the  southbound 5 Freeway in Glendale Thursday, closing southbound lanes.

The big rig stopped on the roadside, just south  of Western Avenue at 2:30 a.m., said California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick  Kimball. The fire and lane closures were just north of the interchange  with the Ventura (134) Freeway.

The big rig that caught fire was hauling about 50,000 pounds of yams, Kimball said. The Department of Transportation requested an extended closure at the  fire location for vegetable cleanup, according to the CHP.

No injuries were reported.
