Nearly 300K Beach Goers Expected on Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is going to be a warm one and could make for the perfect excuse to hit the beach for many Angelenos.

There will be a high near 78 on Saturday and high near 82 on Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

"Sunday is a late crowd because everyone wants to go to Easter services or brunch. If you're planning on using Pacific Coast Highway, plan well in advance," said Chief Mickey Gallagher, who has been with the LA County lifeguard division for 40 years.

When it's hot in the early season, LA County beaches attract between 250,000 to 300,000 people, Gallagher said.

Two to three weeks before Easter, lifeguard towers are moved from their winter positions at the back of the beach to their spring positions at the front of the beach, closer to the water.

Those who assume the water will be warm like the weather are in for a shock, Gallagher said. Water temperatures early this week were below 60.

Beachgoers this weekend also need to be aware of the irregular ocean floor created by the high surf over the last three to four days, Gallagher said.
