Gusty winds of up to 60 miles per hour have created some good surfing conditions but motorists headed out for the holiday were advised to be cautious Sunday.
The National Weather Service said an unseasonably cold low pressure system has created strong west winds that will continue through early Sunday night. A high wind warning was in effect until 6 p.m. in several areas.
The desert slopes of the mountains and adjacent areas would experience the strongest gusts, the Weather Service said.
Motorists were advised to use caution and watch for broken limbs and downed power lines. Areas of blowing dust and sand could reduce visibility to near zero, according to the Weather Service.
But the high winds came as good news to surfers. Surf increased from 6 to 8 feet on some west facing shores. A high surf advisor was in effect until 9 a.m. Monday.
The Weather serviced cautioned there could be strong rip currents and said some ocean activities could be potentially dangerous.
Aside from the wind, Memorial Day weather should be sunny with highs from the mid 60s to lower 70s.
