Rain arrived on-shore overnight, and radar showed a large band of showers stretching from the Central Coast to San Diego early Thursday.

"Now, we're starting to see it move into the desert areas," said NBC4 forecaster Elita Loresca, adding that Southern Californians can expect "on-again, off-again showers" Thursday and through the weekend.

Rainfall totals might reach a half-inch to three-quarters of an inch along the coast and in valley areas Thursday. The San Gabriel Mountains might see up to two inches of rain.

The snow level will fall to about 6,000 feet in the San Gabriel Mountains by Friday evening. Travel advisories are possible along the 5 Freeway north of Los Angeles.

Several single-vehicle crashes were reported early Thursday. More showers might occur during the evening drive, Loresca added.

"Main impacts will be hydroplaning on the freeways due to oil being  lifted by the first rain in a long time,'' a National Weather Service  advisory stated.

A crash on the westbound 118 Freeway near Topanga Canyon Boulevard left one person in serious condition.

A SigAlert was in effect on the westbound 91 Freeway in Fullerton, where two lanes were blocked after a crash near Lemon Street. The road was cleared at about 5:30 a.m.

SigAlerts also were in effect on the westbound 210 Freeway at Mountain Avenue near Upland and westbound 60 Freeway at Reservoir Street in Chino. The alerts expired before the height of the morning drive, but traffic was slow on the northbound 405 Freeway near the 605 Freeway after a crash reported at 6:15 a.m.
