5 Freeway North of Los Angeles Reopens After Cold Night for Drivers

Truckers remained parked at service center along the Grapevine Friday morning after weather conditions forced a closure

Traffic remained at a standstill early Friday on the 5 Freeway north of Los Angeles as truckers and other drivers waited for road conditions to improve in the Grapevine area.

Drivers in Castaic parked overnight after snow and ice blanketed the road late Thursday. Several crashes and spin-outs were reported before the California Highway Patrol closed the north-south route at about 4 p.m.

CHP units began escorting vehicles over the southbound 5 Freeway Friday at about 7:45 a.m. The southbound side of the freeway was opened without restrictions at about 9 a.m.

The northbound side of the road remained closed.

"We're still dealing with some icy and snowy conditions along the Grapevine," said NBC4 forecaster Elita Loresca. "We'll see some improvement in and around the Grapevine, but frost advisories and freeze watches will be posted again tonight and, once again, overnight Saturday into Sunday."

A winter weather advisory was scheduled to remain in effect for the area until about 9 a.m.
