All northbound lanes of the 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles are shut down from Century Boulevard to Manchester Boulevard as hazard crews work to overturn the big rig and remove fuel from it. Meanwhile, an emergency team is working to remove the driver whose body got stuck in a vehicle involved in the crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The name of the person who was killed in the crash was not revealed. The two others who were hurt with minor injuries were described as a 45-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The incident was reported just before 11 p.m. Saturday after for reasons still under investigation, the tanker truck crashed into several cars on the freeway.

Video from the scene showed the tanker truck turned over to its side and at least two stalled cars on the freeway with damage to them. Another vehicle was seen wedged under the big rig.

An estimated 500 to 1,000 gallons of fuel spilled onto the freeway.

The investigation remains underway. It is unclear when the northbound lanes of the 110 Freeway will reopen.

The California Highway Patrol became aware of the alleged kidnapping about 6:45 p.m. Saturday and began pursuing the older model white convertible Ford Mustang at the southbound 5 Freeway and Florence Avenue in the Downey-Santa Fe Springs area, CHP Officer Sean Lough told City News Service.

Officers deployed spike strips on the southbound 605 Freeway in the Cerritos area and that flattened the two front tires, slowing the pursuit to a crawl that snarled traffic behind it, Lough said.

When the car finally stopped on the freeway at Springdale Street in Westminster, people had gathered on the overpass to observe the pursuit.

Video showed the man behind the steering wheel of the Mustang getting out of the car with his hands up, followed by a woman who appeared to be talking on a cell phone.

The suspect and alleged victim hugged before she walked over to the awaiting CHP officers, and the man was taken into custody.

The relationship between the suspect and the victim was not immediately disclosed.

The Democratic nominee for president made a last-minute appearance in the cold open on “Saturday Night Live,” appearing with Maya Rudolph, who has impersonated Harris on the show throughout the election season.

The cold open began with James Austin Johnson doing his impersonation of former President Donald Trump, who was dressed as a garbage man, alluding to something the former president really did earlier in the week.

The sketch then cuts to Rudolph as Harris, along with Jim Gaffigan as Harris’ running mate and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Andy Samberg as Doug Emhoff.

The two eventually leave Rudolph as Harris alone to practice her speech.

“Gosh, I wish I could talk to someone who has a been in my shoes,” Rudolph as Harris said. “A Black, south Asian woman, preferably from the Bay Area.”

But first, Rudolph said that she would vote for “us,” or the real Harris in the presidential election.

“Great, any chance you’re registered in Pennsylvania?” the real Harris joked.

Harris’ schedule originally had her traveling to Detroit after a campaign event in North Carolina on Saturday, but instead she and her campaign headed to New York City for the show.

The appearance was not be the first time a presidential candidate has appeared on the iconic sketch-comedy show. Last season, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley appeared in the show’s cold open while she was running in the Republican primary.

Former President Donald Trump also hosted the show as a candidate in 2015, and former President Barack Obama appeared on the show in 2007.

Comedian John Mulaney hosted the episode alongside musical guest Chappell Roan.

Patty Leon-Encalde says her heart sank after learning her beloved wedding ring was missing on Friday. After a thorough search of her home and her place of work, she realized she must’ve lost it while trick-or-treaters were visiting her home.

“The only thing I can think of is as I was handing out candy, that it must’ve slipped out of my hand,” said Encalde. “It’s one-of-a-kind, it’s incredibly special to me.”

The custom ring was designed by her husband of 28 years, Don Encalade. The couple is hopeful to get the ring returned before their upcoming anniversary on the Nov. 16.

Although their neighborhood is pretty close-knit, the couple suggests that it’s not unusual for trick-or-treaters to come from other towns.

“It kind of hurts, it’s like wow, how can you enjoy your anniversary when a part of us that we had for all these years has gone missing,” said Don. “We’re praying we can get it back.”

The Encaldes’ said they are willing to offer a reward to anyone who finds and returns the ring.

“I just hope it’s a kind soul that might see that this ring might mean something to somebody,” said Patty “If anybody has the kind heart to return it we’d be eternally grateful. It’s (the ring) part of our world.”

November election: Three Los Angeles County propositions on the ballot 

If approved by voters, Measure G would expand the Board of Supervisors from five to nine members following the 2030 Census and the county CEO would become an elected position by 2028. The measure would also create the positions of County Legislative Analyst and Director of Budget and Management.

The proposal also includes the establishment of an Ethics Commission and a Compliance Officer by 2026. The Board of Supervisors has already begun the process of creating an Ethics Commission, with Supervisor Kathryn Barger noting that the move doesn’t require voter approval. But if it is approved on the ballot, its existence would be codified in the charter, along with the establishment of a compliance officer, protecting it from being disbanded in future absent another public vote.

The measure also has a series of other provisions, including the creation of a commission that would review the county charter every 10 years; require the all county departments to present their annual budgets during
public meetings; require all Board of Supervisors agenda items to be posted at least 120 hours prior to a regular meting; authorize suspension of an elected official charged with a felony relating to a violation of officials duties; create a task force to oversee the implementations of the changes; and require that the changes be made with no additional cost to taxpayers.

The charter changes were championed by Supervisors Lindsey Horvath and Janice Hahn, and supported by Supervisor Hilda Solis.

Horvath and Hahn have argued on the need to bring about the changes — saying the current County Charter was adopted in 1912, when the population was about 500,000. But the county now has 10 million residents and encompasses 88 incorporated cities within its border.

Currently, 10 million people in the county are represented by five people on the board.

But there has been dissension on the board about the proposals. Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Kathryn Barger both voted against placing the package on the ballot. They suggested the changes were being rushed forward, and they questioned if nine would be the proper number of members on an expanded board.

They also opposed the concept of an elected CEO, saying in a ballot argument against the measure that the person would lack accountability, serving with no term limits while endowed with the power to control the county’s massive budget and weakening the Board of Supervisors’ authority over the budget and the ability to hold department heads accountable.

Opponents have also questioned the notion that the changes could be implemented without any new costs to taxpayers, given its creation of new elected positions and county offices.

Some states — like Florida, Georgia and North Carolina — report their vote quickly, while others like Arizona, Nevada and California typically take longer, upward of a week or two to tabulate most of their ballots. Within many states, the patterns of how votes are reported can make it difficult to tell in the middle of election night who the winner is going to be in the end.

For example, vote returns can skew toward one party early in a night because only a certain type of vote is reported first — like when mail ballots are counted before any in-person Election Day votes. These patterns can create what are sometimes referred to as “vote mirages.”

A vote mirage is when the current vote count shows a candidate getting a higher percentage of the vote than they will ultimately end up with in the final count. Mirages can be “red” or “blue” depending on which party appears to be benefiting — but “appears” is the really important thing here, because like any other mirage, a vote mirage is fleeting and doesn’t reflect the final reality.

The factors that produce a vote mirage

Generally speaking, there are three factors that produce vote mirages: geography, vote mode and order of tabulation.

Mirages can emerge because of geographic differences in the counties that report more quickly or more slowly. It’s common for small, rural counties or precincts to report their tallies more quickly than large, urban ones, because the logistics of counting votes are simpler when there are fewer ballots to handle. As a result, since voters in rural areas are more likely to be Republican than voters in urban areas, a red mirage can happen when a state’s vote count overrepresents rural areas at a certain point on election night.

Virginia is an example of a state that usually has a geography-driven red mirage early on election night. This is because Fairfax County, a high-population suburb of Washington, D.C., where Joe Biden received 70% of the vote in 2020, tends to be one of the last counties in the state to report most of its results. Until Fairfax County has reported most or all of its votes, Donald Trump will likely have a statewide vote percentage that is higher than his final statewide total.

On election night 2020, Fairfax County reported the results from a majority of its ballots (nearly 375,000 votes) at 11:43 p.m. ET. This single report caused Trump’s statewide vote percentage to shrink in that moment from 50.2% to 45.8%. (That’s close to Trump’s final vote share in Virginia, 44%.)

Another factor that can cause vote mirages is partisan differences by vote mode — mail ballots, early in-person votes, Election Day in-person votes, and so on.

Many states and counties tend to report the results of each mode one at a time. This can cause vote mirages if one party is more likely than the other to cast its votes using a particular mode. This was the case in 2020, when Democrats voted more by mail than Republicans, and Republicans were much more likely to show up on Election Day.

This difference caused a large blue mirage in North Carolina in 2020. In the first hour after polls closed, most North Carolina counties had reported their mail and early in-person votes. Those votes were heavily Democratic, and at 8:18 p.m. ET, Biden was at 57.6% in the statewide vote count. But over the next three hours, the state reported its heavily Republican Election Day votes, causing Biden’s vote percentage to shrink to his final number there, 48.6%.

The third factor that can produce vote mirages is more complicated: differences in the order that specific modes of ballots are counted. This tends to be the most consequential in states and counties that report the results of their mail ballots in small batches.

Many election offices tend to count their mail ballots in the order that they were received, meaning that ballots returned by voters in mid-October will appear in the vote tallies earlier than those received on Election Day. This will produce a vote mirage if there are partisan differences between the earliest-returned mail ballots and the later-returned ones.

This is what occurred in Arizona in 2020. The mail ballots reported by Maricopa County (which accounts for 60% of the state’s voters) on election night included those returned by voters by the weekend before Election Day. This ended up producing a blue mirage, because those earlier mail votes were more Democratic than the later ones.

The results of the later-returned mail ballots were reported in the days following Election Day. Because those late-arriving mail ballots were heavily pro-Republican, Donald Trump’s vote count grew from 46.8% at 3 a.m. ET on election night to his ultimate vote share of 48.9% — just shy of Biden’s 49.2%.

Interestingly, Arizona’s pattern in the 2018 midterm election was the opposite. Late-arriving mail ballots were much more heavily pro-Democratic, and, once they were added, the Democrat, Kyrsten Sinema, went from trailing by 0.8 percentage points on Election Night to winning the election by 2 points.

What to watch for in terms of mirages in each state

The NBC News Decision Desk accounts for these mirages when deciding whether to project the winner in a race. For example, we are less likely to project a Republican winner in a state if all the remaining uncounted ballots are expected to come from heavily Democratic counties. Conversely, we are less likely to make a projection if the Democrat is ahead but most of the uncounted ballots are expected to be strongly Republican, in-person Election Day votes.

We are also cautious about assuming that historical patterns will hold in 2024, especially given that the 2020 election was held during a pandemic, with voters more likely to vote by mail and social distancing affecting how election officials tabulated the results. This year, the Trump campaign has also encouraged his supporters to vote early, which may affect partisan differences between vote modes.

Here are specific details about the mirages we have seen in key swing states in the past — and what could happen on election night this year.

North Carolina: Most of the mail ballots will likely be reported first, causing a blue mirage. In a change for this year’s election, in-person early ballots cannot be tabulated until after polls close on Election Day. We expect the in-person early votes to start coming in around 8 p.m. ET, a half-hour after polls close in the state. But the vote percentages will shift toward Republicans as in-person Election Day votes get reported over the course of the evening.

Georgia: Most counties will report their early in-person and mail ballots first, likely causing a blue mirage before the statewide results move toward Trump as Election Day votes are reported. After that, there may be a small shift back toward the Democrats, as the late-arriving mail ballots are reported from large metro Atlanta counties. Unlike 2020, Georgia counties are not allowed to pause their vote-counting process until they have counted all ballots.

Pennsylvania: We expect the earliest-reported votes to be dominated by mail ballots, including from heavily Democratic Philadelphia and Allegheny counties, causing an early blue mirage. Then, as in-person Election Day votes are reported, the blue mirage will turn into a red one, with the results tipping more Republican than we expect to see in the final margin. Finally those large counties (particularly Philadelphia) will continue to count and report their remaining mail ballots. This will likely shift the race back in Democrats’ direction.

In 2020, the Pennsylvania results at 3 a.m. ET on election night were about 7 percentage points more Republican than the final result. In the 2022 Senate election, the 3 a.m. red mirage was just over 1 percentage point from the final margin.

Michigan: We expect a slight red mirage in Michigan as smaller, more pro-Republican localities report their votes. The total vote count will likely trickle upward as small places report, and the size of the mirage will shrink when large, Democratic cities like Detroit, Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor report. This year, Michigan voters can vote early in person for the first time in a general election, and clerks are now permitted to preprocess their mail ballots, enabling faster counting. Both of these changes may cause differences in vote reporting patterns compared to what we have seen in previous elections.

Wisconsin: In most Wisconsin municipalities, all modes of vote are reported together. This produces a slight red mirage, because smaller, rural municipalities tend to report more quickly.

A handful of large municipalities, including the city of Milwaukee, tabulate their mail ballots centrally and report them separately from their Election Day votes. The state will experience a red mirage until the heavily Democratic mail ballots from most heavily Democratic cities in the state are reported. At 4:42 a.m. ET on election night 2020, Milwaukee reported that Biden had received 85% of its 168,000 mail ballots. This caused Biden’s statewide total to increase from 47.3% to 49.3%.

Arizona: In 2020, about 70% of the state’s votes — mostly early in-person and early-arriving mail ballots — were reported in the first hour after polls closed. This generated a statewide Biden lead of over 14 percentage points in a state he ultimately won by 0.3 points.

As Election Day votes were reported in the next few hours of election night, the size of the blue mirage shrunk to about 3.5 points. It continued to shrink after Election Day as the pro-Trump, late-arriving mail ballots were reported. In the 2022 Senate race, the Democrat was ahead in the first hour by 19 points and won by 5. But in the 2018 Senate race, the pattern worked in the opposite direction, with the Republican ahead by 3 points early before ultimately losing by 2 points.

Nevada: Nevada will experience a red mirage until Clark County (Las Vegas) reports. In 2020, Clark’s first report came 90 minutes after the first county in the state had reported its votes. In 2022, this gap was only 10 minutes. Then, the first report in Clark may cause a blue mirage, which will shrink as in-person Election Day votes are tabulated statewide.

Late-arriving mail ballots will be reported in the days after Election Day. In 2020, these ballots moved Biden’s lead from 0.6 percentage points to a final result of 2.4 points.

In a chaotic scene, mud, objects and insults were flung at the king as his entourage attempted to hold back a crowd yelling “Murderers, murderers!” and “Get out!”

In one heated exchange, a young man told King Felipe, “It was known and nobody did anything to avoid it,” referencing a belief that the government did not do enough to warn residents of the dangers the rains would bring.

Video posted by the Spanish newspaper El Diario showed a flustered Queen Letizia of Spain spattered in mud as she is confronted by angry residents.

The floods, which dropped 20 months’ worth of rain in just eight hours on the city of Valencia and the surrounding areas, was a sudden, catastrophic event that many felt was worsened by a government response that came too slowly to save lives. Some residents said they received alerts on their phones as the water was already rushing into their homes and cars.

On Sunday, volunteers walked into Valencia and surrounding towns by the thousands, stepping in where some felt the government had fallen short.

Luis Javier Gonzalez, 22, who says he has family in the area, was in Miami when the floods hit. He told The Associated Press he flew in to help out. “There’s way more people helping than the actual government, you know, which is crazy. So sad. Unreal.”

Despite the frustration directed at the government, on the ground, there was a communal spirit. On Saturday, thousands of volunteers gathered at Valencia’s City of Arts and Sciences to receive assignments for the citywide cleanup operation, with thousands more returning on Sunday.

Alejandro Vidal, a doctor who turned up at 7 a.m. to volunteer, told the AP that “there were way more people than expected. There are queues everywhere to send people to different affected areas.”

Cristina Hernandez, who lives in Paiporta, which saw heavy damage from the floods, told NBC’s British partner Sky News, “We feel that we are abandoned by the government and we are helping each other, but there are a lot of thieves in the night so we are scared also.”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez acknowledged the frustration when he addressed the nation on Saturday.

“I am aware that the response that is being given is not enough. I know that,” he said, listing the government shortfalls and destruction: shortages, collapsed services, towns covered in mud, homes destroyed and people still desperately searching for their families.

“I know we have to do better,” Sánchez said.

On Sunday in Algemesí, south of Valencia, some volunteers carrying shovels and buckets attempted to dig out a white car car that had been swallowed by thick, brown mud, while others lined up with brooms to clear the streets.

Sánchez said he authorized the deployment of an additional 5,000 troops to help the rescue and recovery efforts, bolstering the thousands already there in the largest ever peacetime deployment of security forces in Spain.

Some will be assigned to cleanup efforts and survivor support, while others will continue to search for the missing. It’s not clear how many people are unaccounted for, and the flows of mud and water make for a challenging environment for rescuers.

Video posted by the Spanish Civil Guard showed rescue workers neck deep in murky water and floating debris as they waded into buildings and parking garages, searching for bodies that might be submerged in the flood.

On Sunday, Spain’s weather agency warned of more dangerous rain along the Mediterranean coast, including Valencia, and potential flooding, overflowing riverbeds and extreme danger for the southern province of Almeria.

About 200,000 people attended the championship parade late Friday morning that featured the World Series champs on open top double-decker buses, the city of Los Angeles said in a news release. The parade started at City Hall and headed south on Spring Street, west on First Street, south on Grand Avenue and west on Fifth Street, ending in the area of Fifth and Flower streets.

As the buses turned onto the parade route, a roar swelled in the canyon of fans that lined both sides of the street. Some waved giant blue LA flags as team members passed and showed off the World Series trophy sparkling in the Southern California sun.

Some fans staked out a spot along the route well before dawn.

“An estimated more than 200,000 people attended the Dodgers Championship Parade in Downtown Los Angeles, with many heeding local leaders’ calls to take Metro and alleviate vehicle traffic,” the city said in its news release. “The parade was conducted without interruptions. All Downtown streets have reopened.”

The LAPD said Saturday morning that 12 arrests were reported in connection with the celebration. Six involving commercial burglary, four were for receiving stolen property and two were due to failure to disperse, the agency said.

The parade was followed by a ticketed celebration with players and fans at Dodger Stadium.

“Look at that. It’s incredible,” an emotional Clayton Kershaw said. “I’ve never gotten to experience anything like this, and it makes everything worth it.”

Adding to an emotional day, the parade is on what would have been the 64th birthday of legendary Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela, who died Oct. 22.

The scene in downtown Los Angeles and at Dodger Stadium was much different than the last time the Dodgers ascended to the pinnacle of Major League Baseball during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. There was no parade to celebrate that championship.

After a downtown LA victory parade and Dodger Stadium World Series celebration, City Hall was lit up in blue and Mexico’s colors of green, white and red to honor the late Fernando Valenzuela. The beloved pitcher would have been 64 Friday.

The Los Angeles City Council passed a resolution marking Nov. 1 as Fernando Valenzuela Day. The Dodgers pitcher and broadcaster died Oct. 19.

Valenzuela joined the Dodgers in 1980, and inspired what became known as “Fernandomania” the following year. In 1981 he become the only player to receive the National League Rookie of the Year Award and Cy Young Award in the same season.

He was also named to six All-Star teams, threw a no-hitter in 1990 and won a Gold Glove Award in his career.

Additionally, the lighting marked the beginning of “Dodgers Weekend,” according to the city. Events will culminated with the unveiling of a mural honoring Valenzuela.

Artist Robert Vargas created the six-story mural of Valenzuela, which is located at First Street at the 101 Freeway entrance in Boyle Heights.

Game 2 drew 15.9 million viewers in Japan, where fans closely follow Dodgers Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, making it the most-watched postseason baseball game ever in Japan. Yamamoto started the game and allowed just one run through 6 1/3 inning in LA’s 4-2 win.

The series averaged 15.8 million viewers in the U.S. on Fox, Fox Deportes and streaming. That marks its best performance since 2017 and a 67% increase over last year, when the Rangers defeated the Diamondbacks in five games.

A full list of locations in L.A. County is available here. The searchable map of more than 600 vote centers and estimated wait times for each location.

LA County residents can visit any vote center, regardless of where they live, and cast their ballot. Voters also have the option of dropping off their mail-in ballots at a vote center or using one of the county’s official ballot dropboxes.

When are LA County vote centers open?

Vote centers are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Vote centers will open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day. Elections officials are urging people to cast their ballots early.

“With additional vote centers opening this weekend, we encourage voters to take advantage of early voting options to avoid Election Day lines and ensure their voices are heard in the Election Night results,” Dean Logan, Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, said in a statement. “Voting early provides greater convenience and contributes to a smoother, more efficient election process for all.”

Voter registration deadline

Residents who missed the registration deadline for the election but still want to vote can visit a vote center and complete a conditional voter registration form and cast a ballot. The ballot will be held until the voter’s eligibility is confirmed.

“It’s a very slim chance,” said NBCLA meteorologist David Biggar. “Mainly for the area mountains with temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s.

“The main story, I think, because the chance of rain is so small, is actually going to be the wind that comes our way as we get into the afternoon and evening, and then into Sunday and Monday.”

By 5 p.m. Saturday, wind gusts will build to 30 mph on the coast with strong gusts in desert and mountain communities.

Winds will shift overnight and into Sunday morning, leaving Southern California with winds out of the north. Expect strong gusts south of the Cajon Pass through the Inland Empire, and in LA and Ventura counties.

“This is starting to turn into an offshore wind,” Biggar said. “It looks like we’ll get our classic Santa Ana setup as we get into early Monday.”

By Monday morning, winds will be confined to wind-prone areas with warmer temperatures and a rise in fire danger.

It’s time for Disney parks to swap pumpkins for poinsettias.

In the thick of its busiest season, Disney’s domestic theme parks have already begun to transition from Halloween decorations to Christmas colors. The transformation starts to take shape practically overnight, with warm autumn banners traded out for festive green garlands. The full metamorphosis takes about six weeks.

About two weeks before Halloween, Disney’s crew begins installing “inconspicuous” elements for the holiday season, such as lighting rigs. The effort is planned over the course of 12 months and involves a number of different departments, from the horticulture team and tech services to crane operators, truck drivers, aerial lift drivers and even culinary experts.

Most of the installation is completed during overnight hours when the park is closed.

“While every day is special at a Disney theme park, Halloween and the holidays are two very magical seasons, and our guests keep coming back year after year for both continued traditions and new surprises,” said Disneyland Resort President Ken Potrock. “These only-Disney-can-do experiences happen because of our passionate cast members, who make magic while most of us are sleeping — delivering seamless and wildly creative transformations of our parks throughout the year.”

Starting Nov. 8 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, and Nov. 15 at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, Disney’s slate of winter holiday offerings will be in full swing — from sparkling ornamented trees and glitzy character costumes to limited-time food and beverage options and exclusive merchandise.

For Disney, these holidays are big business, drumming up significant revenue and traffic.

October and December are two of the company’s most popular travel months for the parks, according to Gavin Doyle, founder of MickeyVisit.com.

“Traditionally, it would have been summer, but it’s actually evolved to be these two months where there’s additional layers of offerings and it’s something unique on top of that,” Doyle said. “It kind of fits into that Disney vault strategy. … This is something that comes out, and then people are really excited about it for a limited time.”

Disney’s experiences division — composed of parks, cruises, hotels and consumer products — generated $9.13 billion in revenue during the period from October through December 2023. In other quarters of 2023 and 2024, the division generated anywhere between $7 billion and $8.3 billion.

This year, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween party kicked off Aug. 9 in Florida and Oogie Boogie Bash, a big trick-or-treating event, started Aug. 25 in California — extending the Halloween crowds into the company’s summer quarter. Both events ran through Oct. 31.

The end of the year also brings a lot of repeat visitation, especially from local parkgoers, he said. In building the infrastructure to accommodate these decorations and limited-time specials, Disney has created a tradition for its guests, who bake it into their yearly plans.

The annual changes to character costumes, food and drink options, merchandise and other ambiance updates give attendees something new to explore.

With Halloween now over, Disney has turned its attention to the winter holiday season. That includes special holiday changes to rides and attractions as well as Christmastime parades and fireworks.

At Disneyland, holiday overlays for Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, It’s a Small World and Haunted Mansion will debut Nov. 15. Seasonal parades, fireworks and festivals will also launch, and Santa Claus will take up residence at the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail.

At the Walt Disney World resort, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party launches Nov. 8 and Jollywood Nights start Nov. 9. At the same time, the Florida park will debut its Christmastime fireworks, parade and themed character meet-and-greets. Space Mountain will be getting a holiday overlay, as will the Jungle Cruise ride, which will temporarily become Jingle Cruise, and other attractions.

Firefighters were called to reports of a boat engulfed in flames just after 7 p.m., according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

The 30-foot boat was burning about 100 feet offshore on Queensway between the Queen Mary and Hotel Maya.

Seven people were treated for various degrees of injuries. Four people were transported to a nearby hospital while the three others refused transport.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The vessel was towed to a yard near Fire Station 21 in Alamitos Bay.

Officers were responding to a robbery call around 9 p.m. near the intersection of Central Avenue and 92nd Street in Green Meadows. A shootout was reported between the officers and two people sought in the robbery.

One person was taken into custody after he was found hiding in a parked car. A second person was sought early Saturday.

The officers’ injuries are not considered life-threatening and their conditions were stable early Saturday.

Police evacuated a nearby laundromat in a strip mall. Video showed customers running in several directions, some carrying their clothes.

Anwer Fareed Alam, 36, and Yousofzay Fahim Alam, 34, each were sentenced to 27 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Wesley L. Hsu, who also ordered them to jointly pay $2,135,739 in restitution, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Both Alam brothers pleaded guilty in February in downtown Los Angeles to one count of mail fraud.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, from October 2016 to May 2019, the pair filed a series of “fraudulent insurance claims via the USPS’ website and falsely certified that packages (they had sent) contained items of higher value than they did and lied that the packages were lost or had been damaged in transit.”

“Yousofzay Alam also included false invoices, as well as photographs of goods that were not actually inside the parcels,” according to an agency statement. “The Alam brothers used aliases and fake business names to hide the number of false insurance claims they submitted.”

“Relying on the false information in the fraudulent insurance claim forms, USPS issued checks to the Alam brothers to cover their purported losses up to $100 in value, plus the cost of shipping,” the agency said.

The Postal Service distributed insurance payment checks to the defendants at their homes and more than a dozen post office boxes that they maintained, prosecutors said.

“The brothers then deposited the fraudulently obtained funds into their bank accounts,” according to the government. “The total loss caused to USPS through this scheme was at least $2,367,033.”

The USPS Inspector General’s Office ultimately uncovered the scheme. The men have no documented prior felony convictions in the federal court system, according to records.

Just as Dodger great Fernando Valenzuela ignited fan support in the Latino community in the 1980s, Shohei Ohtani has done the same for Los Angeles’ Asian community.

When the Dodgers won the World Series Wednesday, Little Tokyo erupted in celebration. And it’s not just because of Shohei. Manager Dave Roberts is Japanese American while NLCS MVP Tommy Edman is half Korean. There’s also Japanese Pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Shu Tamaura is a Dodger fan who lives in a suburb of Tokyo. He said many Japanese baseball fans cheer for the whole team, but he said there’s something special about Shohei.

“We are proud of him not only for his extraordinary performance but also because of his personality,” Tamaura said. “Those virtues he represents are the virtues we embrace in the Japanese communities.”

In Little Tokyo, an Ohtani mural covers one side of the Miyako Hotel. Akira Yuhara, the general manager, said Shohei has his business booming.

“Little Tokyo is very popular now,” Yuhara said. “I saw probably triple times Japanese guests coming to here.”

One of those Japanese Guests is Aki Kuroki.

“The Dodgers won the World Series like 10 minutes before I left my home,” Kuroki said.

He lives in Tokyo and arrived in Los Angeles after the Dodgers won the World Series. He had tickets to game six that won’t happen.

“I’ll go to a parade instead,” Kuroki said with a smile.

Hernandez took a dig at Fat Joe, who he referred to as “just Joe” during his speech, saying that the series was already won following the rapper’s performance in Game 3 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium.

“He (Fat Joe) came out and sang — and guess what? We didn’t even need to play because after that performance we had already won!” said Hernandez.

In the same speech, the Dodgers’ outfielder praised Los Angeles rapper Ice Cube for his performance in Game 2.

Hernandez finished his victory speech with a shoutout to another Los Angeles rapper, Kendrick Lamar.

“Like Dot said, ‘they not like us’ baby!” said Hernandez.

The Dodgers acquired Hernandez in 2023 after a stint with Boston Red Sox. He had spent multiple seasons with the Dodgers prior and was a part of the team that won the World Series in 2020.

Under their agreement, the city must submit a plan to the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), demonstrating how the city will use the land, no later than July 7, 2025. 

And La Habra Heights will be required to create 244 housing units with at least 164 of the homes being affordable to low or very-low-income households.

Newsom’s office passed the Housing Accountability Act in Sept. 2020 to ensure that cities and counties allow the creation of emergency shelters and other affordable housing efforts. 

But La Habra Heights missed the Oct. 2021 deadline to show the city’s housing framework, which must include the planned construction of low-income housing. 

The suburban city located on the border of Los Angeles and Orange County is considered a high opportunity area, indicating access to good schools, jobs and less pollution, according to the HCD’s Opportunity Area 2024 map. But the city only has single-family homes, with zero multifamily housing or affordable units.

After repeated attempts to assist the city to come into compliance, the HCD issued a Notice of Violation in March 2024, state officials said. The HCD then worked with the Attorney General’s Office to reach Friday’s  agreement with La Habra Heights.

“The City of La Habra Heights has done the right thing. Instead of continuing to skirt California’s housing laws, it will finally be complying with its legal obligation to plan for 244 housing units,” said Attorney General Rob Bonta.

Other Southern California cities like  Norwalk and Huntington Beach experienced cuts from state housing and homelessness funds after failing to comply with the state housing law. 

It happened at 2 a.m. at the intersection of Orangewood and State College Boulevard. Several hundred people armed with cell phones and costumes took over the area to watch drivers do burnouts and donuts in the center. 

One of the participants driving a black Dodge Charger lost control and spun into the crowd, hitting the pair of men. 

The injured men, both age 19, are from Orange and Lancaster, police said.

After being rushed to the hospital with major injuries, they were said to be in stable condition.

Police impounded the car shortly afterward and searched for the driver who managed to escape the car after the crowd attacked it.

While the number of street takeovers has gone down from 1,700 reports in 2020 to over 700 in 2024, police said it’s hard to track them down.

“It used to be that these were done over social media with open source pages,” Anaheim police officer Sgt. Jacob Gallache said. “Now they’re using WhatsApp and other applications to contact people to identify where these (takeovers) are going to happen.”

Measure A would repeal Measure H, a tax measure passed in 2017 to create a .25% sales tax with the money going toward homelessness services. The new proposition would then replace Measure H with a .50% sales tax for the next 10 years in LA County to support those unhoused. 

Measure E, if passed, would create $0.06 parcel tax per square foot on some renovations made. The money would go to support firefighters and paramedics. 

Measure G would expand the Los Angeles County government, increasing  the number of county supervisors from five to nine and creating a new position of a county mayor.

The players and their families rode along double-decker buses throughout the streets of downtown Los Angeles, starting at City Hall, and ending at the corner of 5th street and Flower, near the Los Angeles Central Library.

Following the nearly one-hour parade route, which saw hundreds of thousands of Dodgers fans line the streets of Los Angeles for a glimpse of their World Series Champions, the team headed back to Chavez Ravine for a celebration in front of the fans.

The celebration at Dodger Stadium featured a mariachi band, a performance by Ice Cube, several celebrity sightings, and speeches by most of the players. Here are the top five best moments from the parade and celebration.

No. 5 Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman—The MVPs share their stories

The National League MVP trophy will soon reside on the mantle of Shohei Ohtani. The Dodgers biggest offseason signing last winter is shy and soft-spoken. So it was a thrill for fans to hear him address the crowd at Dodger Stadium. And in English, no less! With his adorable dog Decoy by his side on the parade float, Ohtani spoke about his gratitude and his goals, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Fans, already overjoyed by his signing with LA, got a glimpse of their hero’s personality and humor—and a hint at the Dodgers dynasty he could help build.

Then came Freddie Freeman, the World Series MVP, who poured his heart out to the crowd, recounting the physical and emotional hurdles he’d faced this season. He expressed gratitude for the fans’ support, especially during the health crisis his young son Maximus faced this summer. It was an emotional moment, a reminder of how deeply connected these players are to the city and its people.

No. 4 Clayton Kershaw declares: “Dodger for Life” as LA crowd roars

The legendary left-hander had his moment in the sun, and nobody stole the show quite like Clayton Kershaw. When Roberts introduced Kershaw as the “GOAT” and brought him to the stage, Dodger Stadium went absolutely wild. Kershaw, with tears in his eyes, took a beat to soak in the scene and the love of the fans who have been there through thick and thin. Finally, he got to the words that hit everyone right in the feels: “I love you guys—Dodger for life!”

It was the culmination of an incredible journey with the Dodgers, but Kershaw wasn’t the only player to get emotional on the stage. Dodgers’ outfielder Teoscar Hernández, who sacrificed a lot of money to sign a one-year contract with the team in the offseason, was brought to tears while addressing the crowd that was chanting his name.

The moment got even better when he embraced Walker Buehler, who had closed out Game 5 in Yankee Stadium for the championship win. Buehler gave fans a nod to the historic 1988 World Series championship and MVP Orel Hershiser, by wearing his actual road jersey from Game 5, when he also closed out the title for the Dodgers with a complete game in the finale.

Buehler, of course, kept the mood light with a beer bong on the float while rocking the jersey—a wild nod to Dodgers history as fans cheered him on. Later on, he linked up with Hershiser, who surprised him by wearing Buehler’s home jersey.

No. 3 Ice Cube, Dave Roberts, and the viral twerk that no one saw coming

The parade and celebration reached new heights of hype when West Coast rap legend Ice Cube took the stage at Dodger Stadium to perform his classic hits “Bow Down” and “Today Was a Good Day.”

And it was indeed a good day—until manager Dave Roberts decided to get a little too friendly with the rhythm. Roberts joined Ice Cube on stage, ready to show his best moves, but somewhere along the line, he turned into the ultimate hype man, complete with a hilarious, if slightly embarrassing, attempt at twerking.

Let’s just say Roberts has probably logged more hours in the dugout than on the dance floor. As social media exploded, so did the crowd’s laughter and cheers. It’s the kind of moment Dodgers fans will be talking about for years. And though Roberts might cringe watching the replays, you can’t fault the guy for being all in on the celebration.

No. 2  Kiké Hernández brings the house down with the best speech of the day

Leave it to Kiké Hernández to inject the most unfiltered energy into the celebration. With his usual panache, Kiké grabbed the mic and delivered what could only be described as the most epic speech of the day. Between cracking jokes about Ice Cube, Fat Joe, and just about anyone else who came to mind, Kiké had the crowd in stitches. His high-energy performance was a perfect reflection of his personality and his love for the game.

For one final cheer, Kiké got the crowd on their feet, yelling and laughing along, solidifying his status as the unofficial team hype man. This moment encapsulated everything fans love about him—fun-loving, fiery, and always up for making Dodgers fans smile.

No. 1 Honoring Fernando Valenzuela: A birthday salute to a legend

Only in LA would the celebration of a World Series win turn into a heartfelt tribute for Fernando Valenzuela on what would have been his 64th birthday. The Mexican pitching icon, who passed away just over a week ago, was on everyone’s minds and in their hearts. As the parade floats crawled along the route, fans spontaneously broke out into a chorus of “Happy Birthday,” honoring a man whose legacy has loomed large in Dodgers lore since that magical 1981 season when Valenzuela led the team to a World Series victory over the Yankees.

When the parade reached Dodger Stadium, the celebration intensified. Fans held up signs reading “¡Viva Fernando!” and chanted his name in the kind of rally that showed how deeply Fernando’s impact resonates in Los Angeles. It was a touching, bittersweet reminder that while Valenzuela may be gone, his spirit will forever be a part of Dodger history.

Dodgers 2024 World Series triumph over the New York Yankees is a microcosm of their season and the last decade

For the first time, the health insurance marketplace has expanded its eligibility to include Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients thanks to increased federal support.

The state estimates about 40,000 DACA recipients will be eligible for coverage.  

The enhanced federal support also allows the state to cover a with an income above 200% of the state’s poverty level, according to the state. 

Californians under 200% will continue to have access to higher levels of coverage. 

Also, new for this year is the “Let’s Health Talk” campaign in partnership with health literacy expert Dr. Dean-David Schillinger of University of California, San Francisco. 

Researchers say many Californians don’t understand what Covered California actually does or how health insurance works, and the lack of health literacy is what primarily contributes to individuals not signing up for health care coverage.

Only 6.4% of Californians (roughly 1.3 million people) are currently uninsured, a statewide low. 

In Southern California, there are approximately 632,000 uninsured Californians who are eligible for Covered California subsidies or no-cost Medi-Cal coverage.

To help approximately 2 million Californians with limited English proficiency, the new  “Let’s Talk Health” website can be accessed in English, Spanish, Chinese (traditional and simplified), Korean, Vietnamese and Farsi to answer questions and guide consumers through the process of buying insurance.

In 2024, Covered California lowered generic drug costs and copays for medical visits and reduced other out-of-pocket costs for over 800,000 Covered California consumers, according to state officials.  

Roughly 1.8 million Californians have insurance through Covered California.

When should you ship your 2024 holiday gifts? USPS releases deadlines

Bortolleto’s parents are undocumented, but in 2013 she was approved for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, which allowed her to get a job and, with it, job-based health insurance. 

Bortolleto, now 36 and living in Connecticut, left her job at a nonprofit in June, which meant losing her health insurance and leaving her with no other options: DACA recipients have been barred from receiving government-funded health insurance. 

That changed Friday, when tens of thousands of DACA recipients became able to sign up for health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act for the first time.

The change — which coincided with the first day of the ACA’s open enrollment period — marks a pivotal moment for the more than 535,000 active DACA recipients in the U.S.

That lack of access, experts say, has led to high rates of uninsured among DACA recipients, sometimes referred to as “Dreamers.” 

In May, the Biden administration finalized a rule that allows DACA recipients to apply for coverage through HealthCare.gov, as well as the state-based marketplaces, starting Nov. 1. It also lets them access subsidies that lower the cost of monthly premiums. 

Bortolleto said she plans to sign up as early as Friday.

Several weeks ago, she said she was bitten by a dog. 

Although she was in severe pain, she said, she initially avoided the emergency room because of the cost.

“I wasn’t going to go,” Bortolleto said. “But later in the morning, it just hurt, not just the dog bite, but everything hurt.”

The visit wound up costing her a couple of hundred dollars.

“It does give me a sense of safety that I will be able to get health insurance while I still look for the next job,” Bortolleto said.

High uninsured rates

DACA was an executive action signed by then-President Barack Obama in June 2012 that protected undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children from deportation and gave them work authorization.

For many, the ability to work also meant access to health insurance. 

Without access to government-funded programs, insurance options are extremely limited for Dreamers who didn’t get coverage through their jobs, said Drishti Pillai, director of immigrant health policy at KFF, a nonprofit group that researches health policy issues. 

Some turn to state programs for undocumented immigrants, she said. Others may go uninsured and rely on community health clinics that offer free or low-cost care. 

While people can buy coverage directly through an insurer, the cost is often exorbitant and usually not an option for undocumented immigrants, Pillai said.

The limited options, she said, mean many DACA recipients can’t get quality health insurance, resulting in high uninsured rates.

A survey published last year by the immigrant rights nonprofit group National Immigration Law Center found that about 1 in 4 DACA recipients reported being uninsured.

“Now, they will have access to the same health insurance plans that other people do in the ACA,” Pillai said. 

The change is expected to help more than 100,000 people get health insurance, according to a White House fact sheet. 

DACA recipients, however, still won’t be able to get coverage through Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program, which offers free or low-cost insurance for kids and teens, Pillai said. 

Legal challenges

In August, Kansas and 18 other states filed a lawsuit to block the ACA rule from taking effect. The suit was filed in a federal district court in North Dakota and was assigned to a judge appointed by former President Donald Trump.

The lawsuit says that expanding coverage to DACA recipients will create additional “resource burdens” and harm to taxpayers. It also says it will encourage undocumented immigrants to remain in the U.S. in hopes of receiving health insurance through the ACA. 

Arthur Caplan, head of the Division of Medical Ethics at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, described the lawsuit as “just more anti-immigration politics.”

“The lawsuit is obnoxious and in many ways counterproductive to public interest,” he said. “It makes sense to get people into health insurance because they’re here and they’re going to show up to the ER if they get sick and you’re going to pay for them at higher prices.”

“It’s not like they’re not going to get health care anywhere,” Caplan added. “They’re going to get it most likely in emergency rooms, which are the most expensive setting.” 

In a statement, Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach, who is leading the legal effort, said: “The Biden administration’s effort to give Obamacare benefits to illegal aliens at taxpayer expense plainly violates two different laws. That is why Kansas went to court, and that is why we expect to prevail.”

Juliana Macedo do Nascimento, deputy director of federal advocacy at United We Dream, an immigrant advocacy group, said the outcome of the presidential election could also threaten whether coverage continues, noting that Trump tried to eliminate the DACA program entirely.

Macedo do Nascimento, 38, of Maryland, is a DACA recipient herself and currently gets health insurance through her job. But when she was 22 and uninsured, she had an ovarian cyst rupture, which required emergency surgery.

The hospital bill for the procedure was around $30,000, she said. The bill was eventually sent to collections, where it was reduced to $13,000, a sum that took Macedo do Nascimento five years to pay off.  

“We know a lot of folks who have DACA might not have the same access,” she said. “Folks who own their own businesses or who work for small businesses that are exempt from it would not have been able to access health care.” 

‘This is my home’

Dania Sarahi Quezada, 27, a third-year law student at the University of Washington, plans to purchase a health insurance plan Friday.

Quezada moved to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 5 years old and became a DACA recipient in 2012. She and other DACA recipients have asked the court to allow them to join the Kansas case, siding with the defense.

Quezada is diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. A full-time law student, she doesn’t have health insurance. 

She is able to get by because her university offers one subsidized health care visit each quarter at the student clinic on campus.  She uses that one-time visit exclusively to get her OCD medication refilled and pays for the prescription out of pocket.

“But if any sort of urgent health care issue arises, I deal with it on my own the best I can,” Quezada said. 

She said that she’s concerned about the lawsuit, but that she’ll continue to seek health care even if the Republican-led states are successful.

“This is my home, and I am going to fight to be allowed to live here,” she said.

During a meeting Tuesday, the Los Angeles Board of Police Commission will consider recommending an annual salary of $507,509 for McDonnell — more than his predecessor, Michel Moore, who retired in February. Dominic Choi has been serving as interim chief.

If approved, it would require a vote by City Council before it can be finalized.

McDonnell would make more than the president of the United States, who earns $400,000 annually.

It would also be more than what commissioners of the New York Police Department make, which is about $243,000 annually. Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling earns $260,472 annually and Houston Police Chief Noe Diaz earns $315,000 annually.

Earlier this week, the City Council’s Public Safety Committee advanced Mayor Karen Bass’ nominee on a 4-1 vote after discussing his plans for the department and his views on immigration, police discipline, pretextual stops, recruitment and low morale, among other topics.

According to a LAPD report, McDonnell’s nomination may be considered by the City Council as soon as next Friday.

Last year, the City Council approved a new contract with the union representing the LAPD’s rank-and-file officers with a package of raises and retention bonuses in a bid to increase its membership back to 9,500.

LAPD officials reported on Oct. 15 that recruitment challenges remain with the department’s sworn personnel standing at 8,795, as of Oct. 15.

The chief’s proposed salary may be a concern to some City Council members as they grapple with budget woe. City officials are expected to move forward on an exercise to reduce spending and replenish the reserve fund due to lower-than-expected revenues and a strain caused by liability payouts.

McDonnell, however, wouldn’t be the highest paid city employee.

In May, the City Council confirmed longtime Pacific Gas and Electric executive Janisse Quiñones as the general manager of the Department of Water and Power, at an annual salary of $750,000.

Funding for Quiñones’ salary comes directly from the DWP’s revenues, and will not impact the city’s general fund.

According to a representative from Bass’ office, city officials backed the $750,000 salary in an effort to remain competitive with private and public agencies. Quiñones’ salary is similar to rates at the Omaha Public Power District in Nebraska and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

A new women’s basketball league called Unrivaled is set to debut months before the 2025 WNBA season kicks off.

Unrivaled was founded by a pair of WNBA stars in the Minnesota Lynx’s Napheesa Collier and the New York Liberty‘s Breanna Stewart. And since the league was announced in May, a long list of big names from the W have committed to joining.

So, when will the first Unrivaled games be played? And who’s suiting up? Here’s everything to know about the new women’s hoops league:

What is the Unrivaled basketball league?

Unrivaled is a 3-on-3 women’s basketball league founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart. The league’s season will be played during the WNBA offseason.

The league boasts several high-profile investors, including former NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Steve Nash, former U.S. soccer stars Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, and sports media executives John Skipper and David Levy.

Micky Lawler, a former president of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), was appointed as the league’s commissioner.

How many players are in the Unrivaled basketball league?

Unrivaled was originally set to feature 30 players in its inaugural season before announcing on Oct. 31 that it was expanding the roster size to 36. Collier said on X that the league outperforming its financial projections allowed for the expansion.

Could one of the last remaining roster spots be for Caitlin Clark? Well, Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports reported on Oct. 23, citing sources, that Unrivaled was preparing a “Lionel Messi–like” offer for the Indiana Fever sensation.

The Sports Business Journal’s Tom Friend then reported on Oct. 31, citing sources, that Unrivaled’s offer to Clark includes a $1 million salary and “significant” equity in the league. Friend also reported that Unrivaled strategically signed two of Clark’s closest friends — Fever teammate Lexie Hull and former Iowa teammate Kate Martin — as the league tries to convince the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year to join.

Tampering with ballots

Participating in any of the activities above is considered corrupting the voting process and is also punishable by fines and/or imprisonment. 

“This is going to be Election Week, not Election Day,” said Democratic strategist Peter Giangreco.

While it is not unusual for results to take time in a presidential race, 2024 will see some changes that could delay answers for voters.

Changes to voter ID laws and the early voting process in North Carolina could slow vote counts.

Meanwhile, laws in key swing states like Wisconsin and Pennsylvania mean clerks are unable to process mail-in ballots prior to Election Day. In 2020, those states were decided by approximately 20,000 and 80,000 votes, respectively.

“In other states, they can open them up, they can verify them. They can flatten them out, so all they have to do is run them through the scanners. In Pennsylvania, they can’t even touch them,” Giangreco said. “So, we’re probably looking at Friday or Saturday before we know Pennsylvania.”

Delays aren’t unheard of in a presidential race however, according to Dr. Kevin Boyle, chair of the history department for Northwestern University.

“There are a lot of stories of presidential candidates just going to bed not knowing whether they had won the presidency or not,” Boyle said.

In 2020, it took four days before President Joe Biden was officially called the winner. In 2000, results hinged on just 537 votes in Florida, with networks calling the state for Al Gore, then George Bush before ruling the race “too close to call.”

There are many elections throughout the 19th and 20th centuries that weren’t called on election night.

“Even as late as 1960, John Kennedy wasn’t announced as the winner of the presidency until the next day,” Boyle said. “Richard Nixon wasn’t announced as the winner of the presidency in 1968 until the next day. And then what happened was kind of the explosion of exit polls, which made it easier to pick a winner faster, to name a winner faster. And a lot of elections weren’t very close until 2000.”

Beyond delays in vote counts, experts also say legal challenges are likely before a final announcement is made.

Sharon McMahon, a podcast host and former educator known as “America’s Government Teacher,” said there are a “very, very large myriad of lawsuits that are already in process and are going to be filed.”

“There are already over 100 lawsuits in the works related to the election, and there is absolutely more that are on the desks of lawyers. They’re just waiting to plug in the right details and waiting to file those,” McMahon said. “If we think there were 60-plus lawsuits in the post-2020 election, there’s probably going to be double that in this election.”

So what would it take to find out results sooner?

Giangreco said there’s one scenario where results could come in closer to Election Day.

“Only if [Donald] Trump wins Wisconsin or Michigan,” Giangreco said. “If he wins either those states, it’s probably over with. And if we know those states on Wednesday, that’ll probably be it. I think the most likely path for Kamala Harris to the presidency is the blue wall states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania.”

Whether that will happen is unclear.

“This is what it comes down to: If the polls are right and things are even, there’s a massive advantage for Harris on the ground, especially in the blue wall states, and I think that’s her ticket to win. If there’s the response bias that we did see in 2016 and we did see 2020, where the polls undercount Trump voters, then you could be looking that Trump’s really up four or five points in all these states, and it’ll be an electoral landslide for Trump, and maybe even a popular vote win. So either the polls are right and Harris’s field operation is going to win it or the polls are wrong, and it’s going to be a good night for Trump.”

One other potential scenario looms this fall: the “contingent election” of the president and the vice president that would happen if no one can secure the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidential election. 

That has not happened in the modern era, but there are a few conceivable (if unlikely) paths across the Electoral College map that could lead to Trump and Harris ending the race tied at 269 electoral votes.

In the event of a tie, Congress would decide the next president.

On Vin Scully Drive at the entrance to Dodger Stadium, fans added flowers, candles, photos and more to a memorial in front of a sign at the entrance to the property. A fan event is planned for later Friday at the stadium.

The scene in downtown Los Angeles was much different than the last time the Dodgers ascended to the pinnacle of Major League Baseball during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. There was no parade that year.

This time, fans arrived well before dawn to stake out a spot.

Valenzuela is among the Dodgers’ all-time franchise leaders in several categories, ranking fourth in complete games (107), fifth in strikeouts (1,759) and sixth in wins (141). He’s the only player in major league history to the win Rookie of the Year and Cy Young Award in the same season, doing so in the Dodgers’ 1981 World Series campaign.

Valenzuela’s 17-year big league career ended in 1997 following stints in Anaheim, Baltimore, Philadelphia, San Diego and St. Louis. He retired as the all-time leader in wins (173) and strikeouts (2,074) among Mexican-born major leaguers.

But his influence is not solely measured by statistics. He won his first eight games in the 1981 season, pitching a shutout in five. That success led to the “Fernandomania” craze and continued in the postseason, when Valenzuela and the Dodgers defeated the Yankees in the World Series. Valenzuela was also on the Dodger team that won the World Series in 1988 over the Oakland As.

The Navajoa, Mexico, native is a member of the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame and the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame. His No. 34 has also been retired by the Mexican Baseball League.

Last year, the City of LA issued a proclamation declaring Aug. 11 as “Fernando Valenzuela Day.” The six-time All-Star’s No. 34 jersey was retired by the team that same year.

After leaving the Dodgers following the 1990 season, the left-hander with the high leg kick pitched for the California Angels, Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals.

The World Series champions will ride aboard open top double-decker buses on a 45-minute procession through downtown LA. The parade route will travel from City Hall south on Spring Street, west on First Street, south on Grand Avenue and west on Fifth Street, ending in the area of Fifth and Flower streets.

A fan event at Dodger Stadium is scheduled to start at 12:15 p.m. Fans won’t be able to attend both the parade and stadium event due to timing and LA’s notorious traffic.

The team arrived on a flight at LAX Thursday morning with pitcher Walker Buehler carrying the World Series trophy, which will likely be in the spotlight at the parade and stadium event. A crowd of fans gathered Thursday outside Dodger Stadium, where the team stopped after landing at LAX.

The parade and a Dodger Stadium event in honor of the Dodgers’ eighth World Series title mark a closing chapter to a storybook season full of high expectations after the addition of two-time MVP Shohei Ohtani to already potent roster. With a blend of talent and tenacity, the Dodgers survived a few postseason scares before capitalizing on a baffling series of miscues by New York Wednesday in Game 5 to wrap up the championship.

The parade was followed by a ticketed fan event at Dodger Stadium. A portion of the proceeds from the ticketed stadium event will be donated to the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation.

Getting to the Dodgers parade

City officials encouraged fans to use Metro to get to a location along the parade route in downtown LA.

The parade route will travel from City Hall south on Spring Street, west on First Street, south on Grand Avenue and west on Fifth Street, ending in the area of Fifth and Flower streets.

To get there using Metro:

• B Line from North Hollywood and D Line from Wilshire/Western to one of three stations: Civic Center /Grand Park, Pershing Square, and 7th St/Metro Center.
• From the San Gabriel Valley or the South Bay, take the A Line to Second/Broadway, Grand Ave Arts/Bunker Hill, or Seventh St/Metro Center Stations.
• From Santa Monica or East LA, take the E Line to Second/Broadway, Grand Ave Arts/Bunker Hill, or Seventh St/Metro Center Stations.

The A, B, and D Lines can be picked up from Union Station, which connects to Metrolink, Amtrak, and other bus services.

The event at Dodger Stadium is scheduled to start at 12:15 p.m.

Parking gates at the stadium will open at 8:30 a.m. Stadium entry gates will open at 9 a.m. Food and merchandise will be available for purchase. In-stadium entertainment will be offered prior to the team’s arrival, including coverage of the parade on DodgerVision scoreboards.

The team noted that fans won’t be able to attend both the parade and stadium events due to timing.

Metro will operate its Dodger Express to get to Dodger Stadium.

Those journeys are filled with a series of moments, preserved and innately felt like a dream catcher next to your bed. So when those moments inevitably arise, do you give up and quit? Or do you keep fighting?

There were plenty of those moments on Wednesday night in Game 5 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. Moments that are meant to test and tease you. Moments in which you will either rise up with resiliency, or surrender to it entirely. 

When the Los Angeles Dodgers went down by five runs after the third inning, that was one of those moments. They had already used three of their seven available pitchers, and facing the reigning Cy Young Award winner in New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, the situation seemed dire. 

In fact, it was insurmountable and in many ways impossible. No team in the 120-year history of the World Series had ever come back from five runs in a clinching game, let alone with a future Hall-of-famer on the opposing mound. 

So when the Dodgers fell behind by five runs and couldn’t even muster a single hit after four innings, everyone seemed ready to board a plane back to Los Angeles for a Game 6 on Friday. 

Everyone that was, except for the players themselves. Believe it or not, even against impossible odds, they felt like they had the Yankees right where they wanted them. 

You see, the journey of the 2024 Dodgers was always fraught with turmoil. They were knocked down, beaten, and left for dead several times throughout the regular season. But each and every time they got back up and persevered. This team had already been through hardships and setbacks. They had been to hell and back and were battle-tested and brave. 

So why should a five-run deficit in Game 5 of the World Series in the most hostile environment in all of sports be any different?

What will forever be known as the Golden Era in Dodgers baseball began in 2013 when the team qualified for the postseason for the first time in five years. They would eventually get eliminated by the St. Louis Cardinals in six games in the NLCS. The starting pitcher on the mound for that final game of the season was a 25-year-old southpaw named Clayton Kershaw. 

For Kershaw, his playoff journey was only just beginning. Little did he know what was in store for him in the decade to follow. For the next three years, Kershaw and the Dodgers went through a seemingly endless cycle of postseason disappointments. 

Finally, in 2017, with new manager Dave Roberts at the helm they removed the proverbial monkey off their back and advanced to their first World Series 29 years. They were by far the better and more talented team against the hated Houston Astros, but lost the series at home in seven games, only to find out years later their opponent was cheating the entire time. 

Back-to-back years watching their opponent celebrate a championship on the field at Dodger Stadium only added to their agony. In 2019, they constructed a roster that may have been their best team in the 134-year history of the franchise. They won a then-record 106 games during the regular season, but could only manage to win two against the Nationals in the NLDS, with Kershaw once again haunted by the demons of his postseason past. 

In 2020, after eight straight years of disappointment, sorrow, and distress, a global pandemic struck and shortened the season to 60 fan-less games. The Dodgers finally triumphed by winning their first World Series title in 32 years, but they weren’t able to celebrate it. There was no parade down Vin Scully Avenue, and instead only talk of an asterisk being added to the history books.

Three more years of playoff exits, and no closer to parade, the Dodgers began to wonder if it would ever come. Twelve years of triumphs and tribulations, of anguish, agony, and an asterisk. The Dodgers had enough disappointment and heartbreak to last a lifetime. But they bounced back each and every year to go through the gauntlet again. Hoping one day it would have to be different.

After a tough Game 4 loss that swung the momentum back to the Bronx Bombers, the Dodgers could have folded and packed their bags back to Los Angeles. The back-to-back home runs by Aaron Judge and Jazz Chisholm in the first inning of Game 5, could have rattled a lesser team, but not these Dodgers, regardless of what happened on Wednesday, they were ready to etch their names into the record books. 

Seven months earlier, the Dodgers opened the season in Seoul, South Korea against the San Diego Padres. What was supposed to be a joyous occasion, showcasing the game and its biggest stars on the international stage, instead turned into a week of scandal and allegations after Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter was accused of stealing $17 million dollars of the superstar’s money to pay off sports gambling debts. 

An investigation into Ohtani and his interpreter ensued with media from across the globe bearing down with an interrogative lens on the Dodgers and their new $700 million dollar man. It would be enough to derail any team, but not these teflon-tough Dodgers. 

“I don’t think that was on the script of how we started off this year, but I think sometimes when those things kind of happen, it just rallies a group of guys together,” said the 2024 World Series MVP Freddie Freeman of the scandal that started in South Korea. “When you start supporting a teammate in his first year, like we did, for him to go out there and have the greatest season, I think, of all time, it was pretty special.”

When Giancarlo Stanton homered the following inning, the Dodgers still didn’t blink. Just like they didn’t bat an eye when both Max Muncy and Mookie Betts each missed more than two months in the middle of the season with injuries. 

Former Dodger, Alex Verudgo, added another run to the Yankees lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. The five-run deficit seemed insurmountable. Hopes of celebrating a title seemed dashed, just as they did when the team found out in June and July that they would be without starting pitchers Walker Buehler, Clayton Kershaw, and eventually All-Star ace Tyler Glasnow. The latter two, for the remainder of the season. 

“We lost Tyler Glasnow, We lost Clayton Kershaw. Those were pretty dire situations, and yet we came back from those,” said Muncy, speaking to the Dodgers newfound resiliency in 2024.“This game was literally the epitome of our season.”

Muncy was right, the entirety of the World Series, and Game 5 itself was a microcosm of their season and the last twelve years of Dodger baseball as a whole. You get knocked down, you get back up, you get knocked down again, you fight even harder. At some point, these Dodgers would not be denied, and that’s when fate and fortune, or maybe the Baseball Gods themselves, finally joined their side. 

Aaron Judge dropped a routine fly ball that bounced off his glove. Chisholm Jr. couldn’t handle a bouncing throw from Anthony Volpe for the force out at third base ,and Gerrit Cole didn’t cover the bag on a routine grounder to first. Thanks to the Yankees miscues and mental lapses, the Dodgers had life again. 

“Once you get it back in it anything can happen,” said Freeman, who hit a two-run single moments later ahead of a game-tying double by Teoscar Hernandez. “We won it because everyone in that room was contributing to this from day one. It’s just a special team to be a part of.”

Freeman, the Dodgers Iron Man for the last two seasons had a tumultuous journey of his own this year. The 35-year-old missed three separate stints of time during the regular season with a broken finger, an ankle injury suffered during the final game at Dodger Stadium before the playoffs, and because of a heartbreaking family incident involving his three-year-old son, Max. 

Max woke up with a limp on July 22nd, and by the end of the day was unable to walk. Two days later he was suffering from full-body paralysis, stopped eating and drinking, and was placed on a ventilator. Freeman flew from Houston back to Los Angeles to be with his family and missed the next 10 days, while his son recovered from what doctors eventually diagnosed as Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare neurological disorder in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves.

“I wish I’d never had to go through what we did as a family. But ultimately Maximus is doing really, really well right now. He’s a special boy, but it has been a grind for three months. It really has. It’s been a lot,” said Freeman reflecting back on his own personal journey to this point. “Then obviously with the injuries at the end, it makes it all worth it kind of in the end. It seems like we hit every speed bump possible over the course of this year. And to overcome what we did as a group of guys, it’s special.” 

The Yankees fought back and took a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 6th. Suddenly, with Cole still on the mound, the Dodgers were down to their final three outs, and the situation once again looked dire. 

Freeman’s ankle injury, which caused him to hit just .219 with no home runs and one RBI in the first two rounds of the postseason, was also a tough blow for the Dodgers to face. As was Ohtani’s dislocated shoulder. But even with their two top hitters hobbled, they rallied again.

They moved ahead of the Yankees with timely sacrifice flies in the top of the eighth, but the Yankees fought back in the bottom half, putting the tying run on second base with one out. 

That’s when the most underrated moment of Game 5 happened. 

An exhausted Blake Treinen, pitching into his third inning of relief, had just allowed a one-out double to Aaaron Judge and a walk to Jazz Chisholm Jr, setting the table for the Yankees hottest hitter in the postseason in Giancarlo Stanton. 

Roberts, who’s always scrutinized come October, headed out to the mound to check on his guy. Many thought he was going to remove him from the game, but instead he looked Treinen dead in the eyes and said, “Tell me what you got?”

“We had to lay it all out on the line tonight,” said Roberts of that mound meeting with Treinen, which was also meant to allow him time to catch his breath and slow the game down, something Yankees’ manager Aarron Boone did not to do with Gerrit Cole in the 5th inning. 

“We had no one left, outside of a starting pitcher. At that moment, I wanted to get his pulse. I wanted to slow the game down, look in his eyes and hear him tell me he’s got Stanton. He told me, ‘I want this guy.’” 

Treinen got Stanton to pop out to end the threat.

That starting pitcher Roberts referenced was Game 3 starter, Walker Buehler, who came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the ninth to record the first-ever save of his career on one day of rest. 

The move was a masterstroke, setting the stage for the most glorious of World Series finishes.

“It was all adrenaline,” Buehler admitted afterward. “One day’s rest or not, I wasn’t missing this.”

When the final out was recorded the suddenly silent stadium in the Bronx turned into a Dodgers dance party of white and blue. 

The City of Los Angeles, finally got to taste the unfiltered flavor of a World Series victory. 

“Tonight was the epitome of our season,” said a champagne-soaked Muncy in the celebratory clubhouse after the game. “We got dealt a couple blows and came back. We got dealt another blow, and we came back. It’s just guy after guy grinding away, we kept persevering.”

For the Dodgers, their eighth championship in franchise history wasn’t just a trophy or a title, but a gritty exclamation point, 12 years in the making, etched into history with every comeback, every heartbreak, every tear, triumph, and smile along the way. 

To punctuate their season, they once again needed to emulate it. 

They fell behind early, only to claw their way back in the type of comeback that is only found in fairy tales and dreamscapes. Ironically, the thrilling come-from-behind victory in Game 5 was the same way the World Series started as well, with Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam in Game 1 setting the tone for resilience and relentlessness the 2024 Dodgers have become known for. 

“It feels surreal,” said Dodgers reliever Blake Treinen, as he stood amidst a jubilant sea of blue and gold on Yankee Stadium’s hallowed field. “We’ve been through so much as a team, but somehow, we kept going. We weren’t just playing for each other; we were playing for Los Angeles, for every fan who stuck with us through all these years.” 

The fans back in L.A., all 2,792 miles away, were certainly doing their part. You could almost hear the echo of their cheers bouncing off the Hollywood Hills, and the crack and pop of fireworks erupting through the night sky. 

For a franchise whose legacy is as rich as Dodger Blue, this championship meant everything. Sure, they won the title in 2020, but this was different. This was the first full-season title since that iconic 1988 squad led by Orel Hershiser, Kirk Gibson’s limp-off homer, and a team, similar to its present day counterpart, that always refused to back down. 

Fast-forward 36 years, and this 2024 team seemed destined to finally break the curse, redeeming near misses in 2017, 2018, and years of heartbreak. This time, they did it with a gritty flair that no Hollywood script could ever capture.

Freeman, who claimed the World Series MVP trophy with a World Series record 12 RBIs and four home runs, looked back on the team’s long road to get here with pride.

“This season felt like it threw everything at us—injuries, losing streaks, health scares, but none of it mattered. We just kept coming back,” he said. “I hope everyone is talking about the job Doc [Dave Roberts] did tonight. That’s one of the best games I’ve ever seen managed. That was special.”

And indeed it was special, this team had to claw their way out of countless tough spots during the 162-game marathon of a regular season. It was a season where every time they fell behind, they somehow found a way to pull themselves back up.

The Padres took them to the edge in the NLDS, forcing the Dodgers to fight back from their last outs. Then they steamrolled past the New York Mets in the NLCS, a series defined by a jaw-dropping 33-inning scoreless streak that showcased the full force of the Dodgers’ pitching staff, as well as a postseason record for walks (42) and runs (46, 6.7/per game) in a series. 

“We did go through a lot this year,” said Roberts. “There was a lot of back filling on talent because of injury, a lot of young players cut their teeth, which is good. But one thing is that we just kept going. Even in the postseason, I don’t think anyone had us picked. I don’t think they had us picked to get out of the first series. So for us to go out there and fight and scratch and claw and win 11 games in October, that’s a credit to our guys.”

Those 26 guys (and more) all had to pull together on the same rope, there could be no room for individualism, or egos, or selfishness. It had to be one, cohesive, and collective unit to win the World Series and play Dodger baseball. That’s what the series against the Yankees revealed to the world. 

From a wobbly starting rotation that found its footing just in time, to a bullpen that became untouchable under pressure, this Dodgers team was more than the sum of its stars. It was the combined effort of seasoned veterans and gritty newcomers, all united under Roberts, who himself has weathered years of criticism and scrutiny. Roberts managed each bullpen decision and lineup change with precision, guiding his squad through injuries and adversity to pull off the perfect postseason strategy.

For the city of Los Angeles, this victory carries the weight of over a decade of pent-up hopes, dreams, and high expectations. 

“The city deserves this,” part-owner Magic Johnson said, his smile stretching wide as he looked out over the ecstatic crowd of remaining Dodgers fans at Yankee Stadium. “We’ve been waiting for this moment, and it’s finally here.”

Underneath the bright lights of the Bronx and across the sprawling metropolis of L.A., this title belongs to every Dodger, every fan, and every Angeleno who believed through the ups and downs. 

As they prepare to roll through downtown L.A. for the first parade since 1988, the Dodgers are finally kings of baseball once again. This golden era, long promised by president Andrew Friedman, has finally taken its place in the annals of Dodgers lore.

And the Dodgers have won the World Series. Can you believe it? They really, finally, did it.

Dodgers come back to win 2024 World Series, 8th title in franchise history

Metro and the city’s Department of Transportation will implement the first phase of its joint bus lane enforcement pilot program. Cameras were installed on 50 select buses along lines 720 and 212, servicing Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, respectively.

Following this initial period of warning and outreach, citations will be issued for bus lane violations.

“Our buses carry hundreds of thousands of people every single day,” Metro Board Chair and LA County Supervisor Janice Hahn said in a statement.

“It’s not fair that a single car blocking a bus lane can hold up a busload of people,” she added. “Those riders deserve to reach their destinations safely and on-time. This new ticketing system is important, and I hope people don’t take the risk, and move their cars out of the bus lanes.”

In early October, the L.A. City Council approved an ordinance establishing fines for drivers that park in bus-only lanes and zones. Penalties start at $293, and can increase to $381 for late payment, followed by an increase of $406 for subsequent failure to pay on time.

Both agencies will provide outreach to residents to inform them of the enforcement program. There will be payment options available for low-income individuals, once the 60-day warning period is over.

LA Metro rolling out concealed weapons detection pilot at Union Station

According to the Metro, vehicles that block bus lanes and stops can result in delays and disruptions for dozens of people relying on public transportation.

Cameras were installed behind buses’ windshields — one will use “computer vision” to detect vehicles on the roadway and traffic lanes, while another one will record license plates of the violating vehicle.

LADOT traffic officers will review video and verify the accuracy of the images before issuing a ticket. Evidence of a violation will be stored for six months before being destroyed, and any images unrelated to a violation will be destroyed within 15 days, according to Metro.

“Our partnership with Metro to deliver dedicated bus lanes across the city has already improved service reliability for thousands of Angelenos who rely on public transit to get where they need to go everyday,” LADOT General Manager Laura Rubio-Cornejo said in a statement. “This new program will help our officers ensure we continue to realize those benefits as we expand bus lanes to additional routes across our transportation system.”

The agencies are expected to announce phase two of the pilot at a future date, which will add cameras to select buses along lines 910 and 950 (the Silver line), and line 70, which serves Olive Street/Grand Avenue.

Cities such as San Francisco, Oakland, New York City, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia use similar technology to keep their bus lanes and stops clear.

Marvin Magana, 50, was ordered to be held in lieu of $6 million bail while awaiting arraignment Dec. 4 at the downtown Los Angeles courthouse on two counts of murder, along with gun use allegations.

“The suspect responsible for both murders walked into 77th Area station and was identified as Marvin Magana,” according to a statement released by the Los Angeles Police Department.

At about 4:20 p.m. Tuesday, officers went to the 900 block of South Victoria Avenue, near Crenshaw and Olympic boulevards, in the Mid-Wilshire area on a report of a shooting, the LAPD reported.

“Officers arrived and were directed to a male victim suffering from gunshot wounds,” police said in the statement. “He was pronounced deceased at the scene by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics. Later, it was learned the suspect intentionally struck the victim with his vehicle before shooting him.”

The 43-year-old man’s name was withheld pending notification of his relatives.

That victim was found next to the bicycle in front of a residence, suffering from at least five gunshot wounds.

According to the LAPD, Magana walked into the 77th Street Community Police Station at about 10:30 p.m. that night and told police that a woman was dead in the 800 block of South Berendo Street, two blocks west of Vermont Avenue.

The officers “were directed to a vehicle located in the 800 block of South Berendo Street with a deceased 38-year-old female in the passenger’s seat,” police said in a statement. “She suffered multiple gunshot wounds.”

The 38-year-old woman’s name has not been released.

The 15-year-old student was allegedly attacked by 15 to 18 other students while getting ready for practice in the school’s locker room on Sept. 24, according to the lawsuit filed this week. 

The case claims that the boy was slammed into a locker by several teammates and pinned to the ground as students took turns assaulting the boy.   

The boy’s mother took the victim to the emergency room the day of the attack, launching an investigation by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Wednesday. 

Although the investigation is ongoing, the student’s parents told deputies they do not want to pursue criminal charges and were planning to handle the incident with the school, according to the sheriff’s department. 

The boy suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, severe depression and anxiety following the attack, according to his attorney Brian Williams.  

“He’s been deeply impacted by this, and that’s what makes this so tragic and heartbreaking,” said Williams. “Listening to what occurred, and not just hearing but seeing how deeply affected he is by it –  it’s heartbreaking.”

The football program’s head coach was placed on administrative leave triggered by “incidents within the football program” earlier this month, according to the school. The school refused to specify if the leave was related to the sexual assault attacks. 

Additionally, at least eight other Santa Margarita Catholic High School student athletes were assaulted by teammates according to court documents.   

That includes Andi Xoch, who has assembled a small altar or “ofrenda” for Fernando Valenzuela, the legendary Mexican-born Dodger.

Dia de los Muertos is traditionally celebrated on Nov 1 and Nov. 2, bringing families closer as the flowers with their distinct fragrance take people back to a simpler time. 

Flower shops and nurseries expected big crowds before the holiday.

Dan Balsman always puts on an elaborate display for the holiday, but he decided to focus on the election this year, dubbing the display “Project 2025 Halloween Carn-Evil.”

“I want to emphasize this is not against all Republicans; this is against the MAGA republican types,” Balsam said. “The goal was to use satire to make the point, [but] the real goal is to be entertained. Things have gotten so divisive, so people have such anxiety.”

The so-called “anti-Trump carnival” decorations have attracted the attention of neighbors who support Vice President Kamala Harris and even visitors from out of town.

“Everybody has got their opinions. Obviously, the person who put their effort, money, time, and energy into this,” said Kyler Conner, a neighbor.

The Alameda Republican Party said the display is overly political for a Holiday geared towards children.

“Halloween is supposed to be for young children; it’s really not a holiday for adults to politicize and further endocrine children,” said Jeanne Solnordal, chairman of the Alameda County Republic Party.

Solnordal added that she believed it highlighted a double standard in a largely liberal-leaning Bay Area. She said she couldn’t put up a Trump sign without it being taken down.

“The freedom of speech seems to go one way in this area and that is something that will cause us to never unite,” she said.

Balsam said he has received occasional disapproval of the display but that most reactions have been positive.

” The neighborhood seems to love it. We are in a pretty liberal area in Alameda. We would not do something like this in most of the country,” he said.

Balsam said he plans to keep the decoration on display until after Election Day.

Year in, year out, Dodger fans support their team win or lose, but thankfully this year, they’re celebrating Major League Baseball’s biggest win of all — the 2024 World Series.

“LA is all about the Dodgers right here. If you’re not for the Dodgers, I don’t know what to tell you,” said Albert Mireles, waving his giant blue Dodger flag outside of Dodger Stadium. “This is Dodger town.”

The morning after the Dodgers’ World Series-clinching victory over the New York Yankees, fans showed up to the “Welcome to Dodger Stadium” sign, which has been turned into a makeshift altar to memorialize Dodgers great Fernando Valenzuela.

“It feels so good to be with other Dodger fans and feel their electricity,” said Yuni Kim. “I didn’t get to do that during the pandemic, and so it’s just really nice to feel all this positivity and energy and excitement for the team. A team that has been through a lot.”

From the historic signing of Shohei Ohtani and his subsequent historic season, to Freddie Freeman’s son becoming ill mid-season and the first baseman’s record-setting World Series MVP performance, Dodger fans had plenty to root for this year.

“Dave Roberts is our hero. I don’t ever want to hear criticism of him again,” Kim said. “Thank you to the Dodgers so much for this, for this memory that I get to share with my friends and family.”

Yet even as they celebrate, they mourn the death of Valenzuela just days before the start of the World Series.

Crystal Camba said she still feels his presence.

“He is within us. Every day,” she said. “He’s in the dirt, he’s in the green, he’s in the bases, he’s in the micheladas, he’s in the hot dogs. He’s everywhere, just like Vin Scully.”

And now the 2024 season is cemented within the hearts of LA Dodgers fans, who bleed blue for their team.

“I think for LA natives and people who have adopted la cultura of baseball, it’s just like, wow, it’s for them to feel the energy and feel how we carry this as a culture itself within our community,” Camba said. “It has really made people admire and want to take a little piece of it and be a part of it.”

We first met Morris during her workers’ comp trial in the spring. We asked her what she thought of hearing her former boss, Karen Serna, testify about what happened the day Morris didn’t feel well at work. She said in a strong but halting voice, “I didn’t like it.”

Nurse Serna took cell phone video of Morris as she suffered sudden cardiac arrest, telling 911 it was a seizure. Nurses and doctors on scene did not provide oxygen or CPR until more than 7 minutes after her collapse. One doctor stated under oath, he was not qualified to perform CPR.

As for how Nurse Serna reacted, Morris’ attorney Keith More said, “there were six different chances she had to recognize, do something, but she did nothing.”

“We were so relieved,” said Pam Bertino, Morris’ sister and guardian. “I cried when I talked to our lawyer, and he told me the news. The judge made a very sound decision. City of Hope had their day in court. We have the answer that we have been waiting for this whole time.” 

City of Hope issued this statement:

“We respectfully disagree with the decision of the Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board, and we are evaluating next steps.”

Those steps include the right to appeal. City of Hope has until late November to do so. 

“The fact that they want to potentially drag it out even longer is just torture for Andrea,” said Bertino. “We hope they do the right thing. They’re a multi-billion-dollar company, and they have insurance for things like this, so it’s something that needs to happen sooner rather than later. We’re just almost at our wits’ end.” 

Her family has already sold Morris’ house, liquidated her 401k and set up a GoFundMe account to help cover the cost of caregivers, which they say runs about $300,000 a year. There are also millions in medical liens.

City of Hope’s statement goes on to say:

“Our hearts continue to go out to Ms. Morris and her family. Ms. Morris is a valued colleague and friend to the staff at the City of Hope facility where she worked. Our team feels a deep sense of empathy and compassion for her and her situation.”

Those words ring hollow to Morris’ family who say they are looking at a lifetime of costly care going forward. She now lives with her elderly parents, who together with her siblings have had to purchase specialized vans for her. The future of her sons, now turned caregivers, has also changed.

“She wanted to help put them through college, and we are not able to do that with the limited funds she has left, which are dwindling fast,” explained Bertino. “We’re angry because it’s taken so long. It just should not be this way.”

While the judge’s decision answers the question of it being a workplace injury, she also references two other hospitals where Morris worked in the months leading up to the catastrophic brain injury suffered on the job. City of Hope said:

“It is important to note that the decision was not based on how our staff responded to the event, but instead found that COVID-related stress at Ms. Morris’s jobs at multiple medical centers caused or contributed to her sudden cardiac arrest. We respectfully disagree with that conclusion.”

In District 2, the race is open with incumbent Paul Krekorian unable to run due to term limits. The district encompasses portions of the San Fernando Valley including the neighborhoods of North Hollywood, Sun Valley and Van Nuys. Former State Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian and small business owner Jillian Burgos are vying for the seat. 

In District 10, incumbent Councilmember Heather Hutt is running for the first time after being appointed following Mark Ridley Thomas’s indictment for bribery and other crimes in 2021. Hutt is facing attorney Grace Yoo. The district includes the neighborhoods including Arlington Heights, Koreatown and Mid-City. 

In District 14, incumbent Kevin de León is facing a challenge from tenant rights attorney Ysabel Jurado. This is de León’s first re-election since a leaked audio recording, in which he was discussing redistricting with other councilmembers while using racist language, in 2022. The district includes the neighborhoods of Boyle Heights, Downtown LA and Northeast LA.

Anita Lallian, a real estate developer and film producer, recently shared how she came to own the house belonging to the late “Friends” actor and how she will honor him going forward.

“Our agent, @brooke.elliott.laurinkus, said she had an amazing ‘off-market’ property that she really wanted us to see,” Lallian explained in an Oct. 31 Instagram post. “The moment I walked into the home, I absolutely fell in love with the features, especially the view of the Pacific Ocean. We knew it was ‘the one’ and decided to write an offer on it immediately.”

In the post, Lallian showed her Panditji, a Hindu scholar, carrying out a blessing ceremony on the pool deck of Perry’s former Los Angeles home.

“I am Hindu, and it’s customary to do a blessing and prayer anytime you buy a new home,” she explained. “As a real estate developer myself, I believe every property has a history that we may or may not know about, and every home carries the energy that the current owner brings to it.”

As for the energy the “17 Again” actor brought to the property, Lallian emphasized that she will keep it intact.

County elections officials in Southern California follow strict protocol to ensure a fair and safe election for voters, but wrongdoers could still cause problems at the polls on Election Day.

In Oregon and Washington, ballot boxes were set on fire this week in what authorities believe were targeted and intentional acts. Hundreds of ballots were burned and the FBI is investigating.

While no such acts have been reported in Southern California, authorities urge residents to report any unusual activity or wrongdoing.

Voter fraud, voter suppression and voting device tampering are just a few election crimes that could be considered felonies.

Intimidated at the polls

A celebration of the World Series title is on deck for the Dodgers and their fans.

A downtown LA parade and Dodger Stadium ticketed event are scheduled for Friday.

Tickets for the celebration at Dodger Stadium following the team’s victory parade in downtown Los Angeles went on sale Thursday at midday.

And, they’re going, going, gone like a Freddie Freeman home run ball.

Sales began at noon Thursday for the fan event with the team. But early afternoon, a message on the ticket site indicated the event was sold out.

Live Coverage: NBCLA will provide live coverage of Friday’s Dodgers celebrations.

The Dodgers’ double decker bus will drive a 45-minute parade route, starting at 11 a.m. Friday at LA City Hall. The procession will go through 1st Street to Grand Avenue to 5th Street, ending at the intersection of 5th and Flower Street.

Fans are encouraged to take public transportation to avoid street closures and congested traffic.

Dodger Stadium will host a special ticketed celebration at 12:15 p.m. Parking gates will open at 8:30 a.m. and entry will begin at 9 a.m. The event will have in-stadium entertainment as the fans wait for the team’s arrival.

The team noted that going to both events will not be possible due to traffic and timing.

The team arrived on a flight at LAX Thursday morning with pitcher Walker Buehler carrying the World Series trophy. A crowd of fans gathered outside Dodger Stadium, where the team stopped aboard buses after landing at LAX.

The Game 5 victory Wednesday night — a mix of Dodgers tenacity and Yankees miscues — touched off celebrations in sport bars and elsewhere in a scene that was much different than the Dodgers’ last World Series win in a pandemic-shortened 2020 season. This time, fans also are looking forward to a parade, something that was missing after the 2020 title.

The World Series title is the team’s first in a full season in 36 years and the icing on top of a season full of promise with the addition of two-time MVP Shohei Ohtani to an already potent lineup alongside fellow MVPs Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts.

Getting to the Dodgers parade

City officials encouraged fans to use Metro to get to a location along the parade route in downtown LA.

The parade route will travel from City Hall south on Spring Street, west on First Street, south on Grand Avenue and west on Fifth Street, ending in the area of Fifth and Flower streets.

To get there using Metro:

• B Line from North Hollywood and D Line from Wilshire/Western to one of three stations: Civic Center /Grand Park, Pershing Square, and 7th St/Metro Center.
• From the San Gabriel Valley or the South Bay, take the A Line to Second/Broadway, Grand Ave Arts/Bunker Hill, or Seventh St/Metro Center Stations.
• From Santa Monica or East LA, take the E Line to Second/Broadway, Grand Ave Arts/Bunker Hill, or Seventh St/Metro Center Stations.

The A, B, and D Lines can be picked up from Union Station, which connects to Metrolink, Amtrak, and other bus services.

Getting to Dodger Stadium

The event at Dodger Stadium is scheduled to start at 12:15 p.m.

Parking gates at the stadium will open at 8:30
a.m. Stadium entry gates will open at 9 a.m. Food and merchandise will be available for purchase. In-stadium entertainment will be offered prior to the team’s arrival, including coverage of the parade on DodgerVision scoreboards.

The team noted that fans won’t be able to attend both the parade and stadium events due to timing.

Metro will operate its Dodger Express to get to Dodger Stadium.

The NFL team appeared to have provided an assist to the MLB team, who flew in a Patriots-branded plane with the Commissioner’s Trophy they just won by beating the New York Yankees in Game 5 of the Fall Classic Wednesday night.

Cameras were rolling at Los Angeles International Airport as the team stepped off the plane, known as AirKraft, with the trophy in hand. Another plane, though one without a pro sports team’s branding, was part of the trip back to L.A., as well. Watch their arrival in the video atop this story.

Some fans speculated that it was a bit of trolling on the Dodgers’ and Patriots’ parts, as the Yankees are New England’s biggest baseball rival.

But the Patriots responded to NBC10 Boston’s question about how their plane ended up shuttling the World Series champs, and there’s a more mundane answer.

There are actually two Patriots planes, both 767s, and they’re available for chartering through a partnership the team has with private flight provider Omni Air International. The Patriots-branded planes are also used for humanitarian missions, like flying 1.7 million N95 masks from China to Boston early in the coronavirus pandemic.

That appears to have been what happened in this case, according to the Patriots — when the team isn’t using the planes, they can be chartered out. It wasn’t clear to the Patriots if the Dodgers specifically requested their plane or if it was just a coincidence.

NBC Los Angeles has reached out to the Dodgers, who were also readying for their championship parade Friday. A representative for Omni Air International couldn’t share details about customers or how they pick planes.

“Omni Air International is renowned for delivering industry-leading service, and the Patriots’ aircraft cabin layout offers a highly desirable air charter solution for a wide range of clients,” Omni representative Kym Parks said in an email.

With the Patriots 2-6 on the year so far, this is looking like the only chance AirKraft has to haul a championship trophy this year.

Several celebrations spilled into the street, some turning unruly in downtown LA and Echo Park.

The team returned aboard a flight to LAX early Thursday. Players and coaches will be part of a victory parade and Dodger Stadium celebration scheduled for Friday.

However, it may have been a catcher with a Hollywood namesake that was the key to a championship.

Will Smith caught the series-clinching strikeout from Walker Buehler to finish off Game 5 and give the Dodgers their eighth World Series title. In the process, he also extended one of the most confounding streaks in all of baseball.

For the fifth straight year, a player named Will Smith has won the World Series.

The Dodgers’ Will Smith started the streak in 2020 when L.A. defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in a COVID-shortened season. The Dodgers didn’t make it back to the Fall Classic until this season, so what happened in that three-year gap?

Well, not only does the catcher share the name with the famous actor.

There’s a third Will Smith.

That one is a veteran relief pitcher who collected three World Series rings with three different teams, becoming the first player in MLB history to pull off the feat.

The Los Angeles Police Department issued several dispersal orders after some businesses were looted.

“We know you want to celebrate the Dodgers World Series win, but please do not head to the downtown LA area,” the LAPD posted on social media. There are many streets closed in the downtown LA area and traffic will be heavily impacted. Please celebrate responsibly.

A Footlocker store that sells Nike products in the area was boarded up earlier in the week in anticipation of unruly crowds, but people broke through the plywood and windows. Several rushed out of the store carrying piles of shoeboxes.

At Ninth and Flower streets, a dispersal order was issued due to a large crowd that gathered in the street. The windows of a downtown LA building where the Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse is located were tagged with graffiti.

In Echo Park, a bus was set on fire. The bus operator and passenger were able to get off the bus before it was set on fire.

Twelve people were arrested in connection with the World Series celebrations, police said Thursday morning. They were arrested for failure to disperse, receiving stolen property and commercial burglary.

All 24 previous teams that had taken a 3-0 World Series lead had gone on to win the Series. Teams with a 3-0 Series lead have won the World Series in Game 4 21 times with the three exceptions being the Baltimore Orioles in 1970 against the Cincinnati Reds; the Yankees in 1937 against the New York Giants; and Philadelphia Athletics in 1910 against the Chicago Cubs.

Celebrations also broke out after Game 2 of the series. Deputies responded to an East LA neighborhood after Saturday’s win following reports of a street takeover and fireworks.

In a social media post over the weekend, the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department encouraged fans to cheer on the team and to celebrate when they win, but that post came with a warning about vandalism, unlawful assembly a public intoxication.

“Unruly, illegal behavior will not be tolerated,” the sheriff’s department said online. “This is a time for community pride and unity as we support our home team; however, it is essential that it is done safely.”
