“Incredibles” Director Helming “M:I4,” Says Cruise

After months of contemplating both Edgar Wright and Brad Bird to direct "Mission: Impossible 4," Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have finally made their choice.

“I dig Edgar. Very nice guy, very smart, very talented, I’d really like to do something with him,” Cruise recently told Empire. “I met Edgar on the set of 'Mission 3.' Simon Pegg and those guys are hilarious. I love 'Shaun Of The Dead.' It’s amazing. But we’re working with Brad right now. I don’t know if I’m allowed to talk about it but everything’s signed... Brad is doing it.”

“'The Iron Giant,' 'The Incredibles,' 'Ratatouille' – Brad is enormously talented and J.J. and I are having a blast, cranking away,” Cruise went on. “We’re having a lot of fun. I like working with people I just love hanging out with. You get to hang out and laugh and talk stories and movies and technology: what are we going to do?”

The idea of Cruise sitting down with a bucket of popcorn to watch "Shaun of the Dead" is beyond incongruous, but, hey, the fact is Cruise homed in on two of the more inventive directors out there when looking for someone to helm "M:I4."

That said, if Bird is going to do a sequel, why on Earth isn't he doing "The Incredibles 2"? The end of the film was clearly written with an eye toward a sequel.Let's hope he can breath a little life into the "Mission" franchise.

Cruise will be seen starring alongside Cameron Diaz in "Knight and Day" on June 25.
